CHAOPHRAYA is an outlet of Thai restaurant chain located in the heart of Birmingham. It has a spectacular Thai interior, great and calm atmosphere, perfect for a romantic dinner. The Thai staff is friendly and helpfull. Food is just OK, nothing is to die for and nothing bad, still worth to try…

This is an absolutely lovely restaurant. I’ve been on a few occasions and had different dishes, each time I was happy with my choice. My particular fav is the duck curry with coconut rice, followed by the deep fried ice cream(YUM!). The interior is very modern and chic, complete with coloured lighting & a tank of jelly fish in the wall. The only reason I haven’t given it 5* is the slightly dodgy service. This was particularly bad when I took a group for my birthday and we waited 20 minutes to be served our wine only then to be told they didn’t have the bottle we’d ordered. Can’t fault the food, but the service side could do with some work.

This is a really nice restaurant with top quality food! It’s a good place to eat alone as it has a bustling atmosphere so there is no awkward feeling! What really makes this place is the staff, so friendly and helpful. Remember to take change to leave a tip as there is no service charge option when paying on your card.

Went here for a post valentines dinner with my husband. Lovely atmosphere, lots of couples around due to it being valentines. The staff are really really polite and sweet. I really like the way that they had translation of Thai phrases in the entrance area. Lovely red rose on the table. Aw nice. I only ordered two starters as I was really full already! I had the veg spring rolls. Two of them looked perfect, the other two had broken pastry with the filling splurging out of it and burnt. The waiter kindly changed it for me free of charged. For main I had the mushroom soup. Really nice soup, quite rich and maybe too many mushrooms in it(I know I sound like I’m complaining!) Looking forward to going back.

Visited last night for an evening meal with a friend. Extensive menu for both food and drink. Started the meal with a gin based Thai cocktail that was excellent in flavour. The menu had loads of good looking options, and feeling indecisive ended up going for the set menu, as recommend by the restaurant, with some prawn crackers to start(that disappointingly we were charged an extra £2 for). The starter platter came quickly, and featured 4 or 5 small starters, including ribs, dumplings — all tasted great, with 2 of each so we got to try everything. Main courses came soon after, with the staff having to bring an extra table to hold all the food. The set menu featured 4 mains + egg fried rice and all seemed full size. The mains were all the favourites, a duck curry, sizzling beef and 2 stir fries. All were good, only complaint being that it was too much food! The set menu also includes a fruit chocolate fondue, which was with great tasting bitter dark chocolate dip. The service was good, and we were in and out in just under 2 hours which was good for a Friday night. The meal was a little on the expensive side with food + a couple of cocktails coming just over £50 each, but even with the cost this place is well worth a visit

I love love love love Thai food, by far my favourite cuisine. We went in for a quick dinner as was heading out for along night out and although we hadn’t booked, we were accommodated right away without question and seated in the upstairs room. We went straight for mains, and the ever formidable Thai Green Curry, which is just magnificent.

A friend wanted Thai food for lunch and since we were in the centre of town, we thought we’d check out the food establishments that are near the Bullring. I rarely venture down here, so I though, why not! It was busy though we managed to get a table outside. I had a feeling that had we not actively gone inside to get a menu, we would have been left without one for a while. We went straight to mains and skipped starters(though the starters on the table next to us looked good!). I had the chicken sweet and sour. I felt it lacked real flavour but there was a good chicken to vegetable ratio. My friends Chicken Pad Thai she said was good(and she’s been to Thailand so it must be a compliment). I felt it was overpriced, about £8 — £15 for a main and £6 — £8 for a starter. However, it is the location you’re paying for. The cheapest wine was £17.95 and it wasn’t that good. It is a good place to sit outside and watch the world go by but there are better places in Birmingham to do that. Even though I probably won’t go here again, it was incredibly busy at lunch, though it was a weekend. I wonder how it does in the week…

Visiting this place tonight and was not disappointed in the least. I had the Thai Red Prawn Curry… absolutely wonderful. It had a lot of fresh basil on top. The only downside was the eggplant wasn’t super good. My husband had the Massaman Lamb Curry. Very tasty and a lot of meat in the dish. We ordered coconut rice to go with the dishes. We were sharing with each other and decided that the two dishes being creamy and pretty rich that it would have been better to get one of our dishes without a creamy sauce. We will do that next time! Great atmosphere. And the bathrooms are like spas! A winner!

This place was very friendly with pretty decent food. I’d probably have given it 4 stars had I not been to Thailand last year. That has changed everything for me. But the Thai fishcakes were nice to start with and the peanut chicken was main was also very good!

I’m not normally a fan of Thai food as heavily spiced food doesn’t sit well with me. A boring green curry is about as adventurous as I’ve been with Thai food. My husband on the other hand, loves Thai food and after having a gander at the menu online I thought I’d give it a go. Overall I was very impressed. The staff are friendly and very attentive, making sure our wine and water was topped up and just generally being nice. We started with the Asian sharing platter containing duck salad, ribs, tempura prawns and something else I now can’t remember. It was little on the pricey side at £10 a head, but well worth it. After looking over my options for a main that didn’t contain the word chilli, I went with the grilled peanut chicken and sticky rice. The chicken was perfectly cooked and full of flavour. Portions are large and despite trying, I couldn’t finish it. I did venture dessert as well, the deep fried ice cream was amazing. It has completely changed my mind about Thai food and I’m looking forward to going again.

I had the privilege of dining in this wonderful restaurant while traveling around the UK in June. I have to say that this is the most original Thai restaurant that I’ve ever been to. First of all, the restaurant is just incredibly nice inside — the place obviously cost a fortune to build. I am a huge Thai food fan and I was very hungry when I sat down. I was expecting just another menu with options like green curry and pad see-ew, but when I looked at the menu I was blown away. The menu is absolutely enormous, and it includes a plethora of dishes that I had never seen elsewhere. I ended up settling for the Bean Curd with Yellow Bean Sauce(or something along those lines). My friends both ordered some sort of fried pork belly dish that looked really good. The tofu was delicious! My only complaint about this place is that you have to pay an extra 3 pounds for a side of white rice. I thought that was kind of silly since the meal was already quite pricey, although completely worth it. But yeah, overall this is probably the coolest Thai place that I’ve ever been to. Highly recommended if you have the cash!

Been here several times with friends and have never been disappointed! Great service, great menu and lovely décor. They have a tank of jelly fish to gaze at while waiting for your food. There is an open kitchen so you can see and hear the food being prepared and listen to the Thai chef’s talking to each other it adds to the authenticity. I have tried the ribs, tempura prawns, dumplings, crispy pork belly, pad thai, tom kha soup(amazing) and several other main courses all have been delicious and served on nice villeroy and boch crockery. The cocktails are always lovely too! I highly recommend Chaophraya.

I could smack myself for taking so long to get myself here. Wonderful food, great atmosphere(lovely bathroom taps to boot) I enjoyed everything from the traditional Thai greeting of the hostess to the attentive staff. The food was light and well presented. Portions were generous so if you’ve had a large lunch then go easy! I had the spare ribs starter(4 huge pieces!) and a beef salad main with pomegranate(huge chunks of beef!). Not greasy, not oily, but perfect good food that left me mute. I was too stuffed to threaten the dessert menu! If I have to have one criticism, it was their lack of tap water for the table but the waitress was attentively filling up our glasses whenever we required.
From the busy evening crowd, Chaophraya is obviously popular and I genuinely can’t wait to go back there. Lovely!

I stumbled upon this restaurant after a long day of solo shopping. My gamble paid off. The food was beautiful and the service was excellent. I had a lovely virgin cocktail(it was pretty to the eye and to the taste buds) and the best salad I had ever eaten in my life. For a salad it was very filling, but I still had dessert because I was alone and there was no one there to judge me. The banana fritter pud was also gorgeous. The staff were incredibly friendly and extremely attentive(and also really cute). I would definitely go back and take non-judgmental company with me(I want to try something else from the dessert menu).

One of my most memorable — and enjoyable — food outings of late was at relatively new Thai addition Chaophraya. Looking for an escape from a particularly bitter winter Friday evening, we headed to Jamie’s Italian but was told the wait was going to be at least an hour. We were starving so, with a large percentage of our group already big Thai fans, we decided to take a gamble on neighbouring Chaophraya. We were glad we did. We were given the option of waiting for a table upstairs where we could order mains from the menu or immediately taking a seat downstairs where a set price of ten or so pounds would grant us access to the buffet. Although the thought of a buffet doesn’t exactly make my tasetbuds kick in(I always picture stale food with thumbprints on it), starvation won out in this instance and so we went for the buffet option. For the price we paid and the amount of food we got, it wasn’t half bad with a number of dishes available to us and thankfully being topped up as patrons returned for seconds, thirds and fourths(yep, the latter refers to me and mine). There was some absolutely blinding red wine on the table(the fact that I can’t specify what it was proves this) and our servers were efficient and, best of all, fantastically friendly. One of our party was celebrating a birthday and, at our request, the whole staff gamely sang a big and bright ‘happy birthday’ and presented her with a shot that she still refers to as one of her favourite to this day. So, if you’re ever left waiting by Jamie, give this a go — you might be pleasantly surprised!
