If you’re someone who’s grown sick and tired of seeing a Starbucks on every other street corner(and Café Nero’s in between them), then you’re probably keeping a keen eye out for an independent, local coffee shop, something that’s becoming a rarer and rarer site courtesy of the aforementioned multinational companies squeezing out their small competitors. Café Latte goes beyond the offerings of these businesses, serving various hot foods such as omelettes(£2.50) and jacket potatoes(a very reasonable £2.75 with one filling of your choice). The hot food is good, if slightly unremarkable, but it’s rare you find such an offering combined with a cosy coffee shop setting, so it gets a thumbs up from me. There’s quite a bit of seating inside too, and I’ve never had a problem finding a seat, so the usual endless wait in Starbucks to find so much as a sofa arm to perch on is not a problem here. Recommended.

In the space of about 5 mins, my other half went from ‘M’love’ to ‘Sir’ here. I’m not sure why — I don’t think he’s ever been called ‘Sir’ before in a café, but hey, it could have been worse. It’s nice to be able to get a reasonably priced coffee at an independent café — particularly in south Birmingham. So I appreciated this place. I ordered a cappuccino, which arrived like a mountain of snow — an impressive looking thing. Albeit mostly froth. But still impressive looking. It was good coffee, too. It was sadly quite empty when we were there, except for one old dear who seemed to be falling asleep into her latte. But the chit-chat from the staff made up for the lack of atmosphere, so this ended up being a good, inexpensive pit stop from the high street in Kings Heath. There are an alarming amount of police and CCTV notices plastered onto the front window, which I have to admit I found a little off-putting. And bizarre. Perhaps the Kings Heath mafia all hang out in Café Latte, quaffing mountains of foam and chatting to the friendly staff? I can’t imagine the place being over-run with hooligans. Maybe the little old lady was a secret assassin… Either way, it was a good coffee stop at a good price, so I’m not particularly concerned that they’ve caught me on CCTV, enjoying it.

Café Latte is bog standard café that does a variety of sandwiches, salads, jacket potatoes and of course coffee. Served by a rather impatient women who expected me to know what I wanted to order as soon as I came through the door. I needed to acquaint myself with the menu first and this seemed to irritate her even more. Anyway I finally ordered as chicken salad sandwich on brown bread. And that’s what I received, of an unremarkable quality but nonetheless I ate it and it satiated me as I hoped it would. This is ordinary food. Good-quality ordinary food, but still ordinary. You can get a better snack elsewhere but they do provide an edible(and sometimes tasty) sandwich when you’ve no where else to go.
