I’m going to let you into a secret: The Birkenhead branch of Abakhan has a fantastic Bargain Corner where you can get bags of zips, ribbons, sequins and fabrics for radically reduced prices. Zips and ribbons start at around 99pm with mixed bundles of wool, tweed and cord fabric going up to £20.
Future brides and grooms should note, Abakhan also sell material for wedding and bridesmaid dresses including some fabulous silks, satins and chiffons. I particularly like the shocking pink taffeta but then, I’ve never been your average girl! They have a big selection of patterns too and seem happy to recommend local seamstresses and dress-​makers if you’re not brave enough to make your own.

This palce is great for fabrics. I alsways go here, particularly when making the kids a costume for school. It has a great selection of fabrics and arty stuff. The staff are very friendly and more than willing to help you out if needed. Not as cheap as it used to be in latter years, but I still love it! Definitely worth a visit.

Not a big abakhan but still sells some good bits n bobs and cheap materials to make your own curtains/​clothes etc. Cheap prices — well worth a look
