Rhubarb serves delicious food and it’s a BYOB restaurant. I’ve dinned here numerous times with friends and always find the service lovely. On my last visit I had beetroot risotto starter. Not fancying the vegetarian main on offer I asked if the Chef could adapt the mushroom and chicken pasta to a vegetarian version. He kindly obliged and I had a beautiful mushroom, sweet potato and vegetable pasta dish for my main. It was hearty, fresh and delectable. Compliments to the Chef for such a great meal and kindly adapting the dish for me. Superb. As Rhubarb is tucked away in Little Victoria Street I often forget about it. I think I’ll have to make a return soon. Delicious food in a small, snug restaurant — makes for a lovely evening out.

A small treasure in an off-beat street. The food is of great quality. Not pretentious at all, just good food and even better prices. Get the beouf!!!

Heading into town for dinner can be pretty expensive, so on a night out with the girls someone suggest this cute place because it was BYO, as sometimes that’s the only excuse you need. As it is mostly just a daytime café with late nights at the weekends my expectations weren’t high, but I admit to being surprised. The goats cheese salad to start, while not ground-breaking was fresh and creamy and the beef to follow with garlic mash(I love mash) was like a hug on a plate. It is not the biggest place in town, but for a small group of girls(and a large bag of wine) and coming in just over £20 per head for two courses it is a great spot if you are heading to the Opera House or just putting the world to rights.

We ambled around Belfast, not far from the Europa hotel, with lunch in mind. I was hesitantly thinking Red Panda, but not really as I’m there often enough I wanted somewhere else new to try. Passed a restaurant place that looked fine, but spotted Rhubarb just down the street from it, not the forced product of which I am very partial, from the good folk in the wonderful Yorkshire triangle. I’m also very partial to gooseberries, which I regret to say have almost vanished from sale, so I grow my own and its wonderful. Anyway, back to Rhubarb, the café. It had a Unilocal sticker on display on the window so that was it decided, here we eat. It was a pleasant warm day, so we sat outside. My son had a club sandwich, and a diet coke and I thought but didn’t say, how boring, life is far too short for sandwiches. Sandwiches will only do if there is nothing else, or the else is worse and I’m not sure right now what could be worse. So I was caught between a choice of salt and pepper squid(wonderful) served with a spicy salad(not so wonderful) I am not that enthusiastic about salads, which tend to be mixed leaves and generally unadventurous, unless the dressing is excellent and very fresh and augmented with lots of toasted pine or walnuts and/or garlicky croutons and/or sun dried tomatoes, pickled aubergines, artichoke hearts, pickled pear perhaps — well you get the picture — most of the things I wasn’t going to get with this dish, or fish n chips with mushy peas(£6.95). You can see the photo of my fish n chips. Turned out to be haddock and these guys pitched it perfectly with a light thin batter and a tasty portion of fresh fish. The double cooked chips were wedged in a teacup and I thought oh! bit mean portioned guys but with the tasty peas and the tartare sauce it was more than sufficient. One downside though, I didn’t really like the taste of the coffee — I had a latte, and it was bitter, if it was on coffee alone it would be two star. Service efficient and friendly. Total bill about £17. As I write I’m listening to the news, y’know I feel sorry for Gibraltarians, as they really are caught between a rock and a hard — up place.

Nice poshish café with decent coffee and nice breakfasts… if what you’re looking for is a fry. And not just a fry, but a fry poshed up. Pretty low-key and reasonable, price-wise(I think my fry as £6 including tea)… and just a few minutes’ walk from the Europa. So that’s something.

This is a dinky little café/resto tucked away up on a corner just off Great Victoria Street. It caught my eye with its pink logo and on closer examination the menu looked good and the interior quite cool. The menu was pretty big and had all the usual lunch/main meal type things on it plus a great selection of hit drinks and ‘treats’. I just had a coffee as I’d planned to eat later in town but I was impressed by the food that quite a few people were tucking into. Apparently they have a special ‘theatre menu’ like a few of the nearby restaurants and there is a BYO option for the evening menu which is always a mice touch. Staff were friendly and there was a great selection of contemporary art on the walls which gave the place a nice bit of character. I will be back to eat a proper meal sometime soon. Pros: Nice décor and great menu. Cons: Easy to walk by.

This new little eatery just outside the city centre is a delight to behold. The menu is cheap but the food is not — really good quality cuisine presented beautifully with prices that won’t make you cry. Sure the little restaurant is on the small side but the light brown leather and wood combo, as well as the open to view kitchen make it feel much more up market and luxurious. I enjoyed a ham and cheese omelette with two slices of toast and a cup of tea for just over five pounds. The staff were nice and I noticed a BYOB offer for Thursday to Saturday evenings when they stay open late for dinner. If you want top quality food at good prices then I would recommend this lovely, fresh feeling hole in the wall.

The very name of this café sounds tempting and both times I have eaten lunch here I haven’t been disappointed. First time I had a burger — which was excellent, the second time pasta with chicken and white wine sauce. My daughter’s oyster mushrooms, spinach and tomato confit with penne kept up the standard. They serve dinner on Thursday, Friday and Saturday with a pre theatre menu too. The chefs evidently know what they’re doing and you can bring your own bottle, which is appealing. Basically you can get some good food of the standard of a more expensive restaurant. The only thing I wonder is how comfortable it is in winter as the premises is small, on a corner and though the furniture is stylish wood it’s a little on the Spartan side. Still it’s an excellent day time café, good for coffee and all day breakfasts.

I’ve only been here once, and it was for a Christmas dinner, so I probably didn’t really get the full Rhubarb experience! That said, I was quite impressed with the meal I did have, which bodes well for their regular menu. The restaurant is quite small, but when we went was only one other party there, so it didn’t feel too cramped. I think the place had only been opened a few months, which probably explains why it wasn’t packed. I’m sure it will be this year! The food was of a good enough quality. Not quite as good as its older sibling, Ginger, but for the price we paid, I was really satisfied. The staff also coped quite well. It was a fairly chaotic group, which can be confusing for poor waiting staff, but everybody got the right thing, which was honestly something of an acheivement! A big feature of this place is the fact that it’s BYO. I’m not normally a fan of walking into a restaurant with a blue bag in hand, but in this case, it was grand. Although, I think we brought far too much and ended up drinking way more than we had intended, so maybe it’s not the best course of action for me from now on!

We chanced along Rhubarb taking our usual little side street detour to the Dublin Road on the hunt for something to eat. The restaurant itself is a little small but it just looked cool, I took the Rhubarb in speech bubbles to be a cheeky reference to Monty Phython(what crowds would shout in the show) and for the geek in me, this was enough to go in. It’s was early in the day so we ate from the lunch menu. The service was fantastic and before I knew it, I had my honey and pork sausage and mash gazing up at me. It really was an enjoyable lunch and I’ll definitely be back, a place with such nice food and a bring your own bottle policy is hard to come by and needs to be taken advantage of.
