Café Metz has been around for a long while. Its one of those places that never changes and doesn’t really need to. I used to sit in here years ago reading my book and eating a bagel with cream cheese and bacon. Its one of those wee spots in Belfast that will always hold a wee place close to my heart. Metz menu is plain straight forward non fancy food, that’s tasty and comforting. Things like fish and chips, lasagne and Quiche, with the odd stir fry stew and a selection of soups sandwiches and Panini’s. In short good honest food that will comfort and fill you. I was there on Sunday for a wee bite of lunch(they do Sunday roasts too) and I ordered the Hoi Sin Stir fry with noodles. Absolutely delicious with very generous portions. The staff are friendly and helpful which just adds to the whole good experience. This place is by far the fanciest most up market place in the city centre, but you know what I’d take it over a lot of places because I know I’m getting good food, reasonable prices and friendly service. This is one place that proves you don’t have be a posh high roller to score 5 stars.

The food was quite cheap and tasted nicer than I expected, the café provided a fast and effecting service. The café is centrally located in town so it’s perfect for a quick bite if your out shopping or on a break for lunch.

I’ve been slowly but surely conquering all of Belfast’s coffee shops but today after a morning meeting I walked past one I had never visited, I then convinced myself I needed another coffee despite the fact that I had already racked up 4 coffees in the first 3 hours of the day. You can never have enough coffee though! Metz is much more than just a coffee shop with specials boards behind the counter jam packed with lunchtime options and tempting sweet treats protected by a glass screen behind the counter. Metz is somewhere in between old-fashioned tea room/coffee shop and hipster hangout. Exposed brick work on the walls lean it towards hipster but the stack of condiments adorning each table bring it right back down to earth. To be honest I don’t think it matters what genre Metz belongs to as judging by how busy it was they are doing something right. The staff are second to none — my laptop was barely out of my bag and the apron clad barista offered me the WiFi code. A few of the other serving staff were greeting customers by their first names and if they didn’t know them they kept it formal by referring to them as Sir or Madam. The food looks amazing and the coffee is decent but not world beating. Metz has now been bookmarked to try for lunch.

When it comes to eating on High Street, you don’t really have much choice, and if all your requirements are that you want something hot then Metz Espress will do the job. It seems to be stuck on a bit of a timewarp, reflected in the menu, and the best way I can think of describing it is like an airport café. This also applies to the prices, where you seem to be paying way over the odds for what you get. It always seems busy, and this may be due to the location, but if you are looking just a chippy style lunch you’d be better off in Brights down the road, or quality home made fayre the Grapevine round the corner. Competition in town is tight, and this place might want to ‘espress’ their socks up.

This place makes good food– filling without being fatty. It’s not all that cheap, but it’s not too expensive either. The coffee is pretty decent, and it’s quite centrally located. I would recommend going here.

This place is great to just relax in, with friends or even without. It’s the one coffee shop in town where I don’t mind getting my netbook out and have no worries of looking like a fool. Because the people here don’t care. They are just in to enjoy the nice coffee and feast on a muffin or cookie. Personally, I love the Caramel Square’s in here. Diabetically amazing they are! As John M pointed out, there aren’t many good coffee houses around this street, but Metz is propping up and holding it’s own against the greasy spoons!

I’ve been here for lunch many times in the past when I do believe it was called something different and I’ve always had a nice time in here. The room is big and airy with the serving counter set at an angle down the left hand side and the rest of the place is taken up with the seating and tables. There’s also some striking art on the wall which gives it a more cosy feel, not sure if it’s for sale as I thought I saw a Sean Scully piece which surely would be a tad expensive(and rare). The staff are really friendly and service is quick and to the point. I normally go for the chicken in sweet chilli sauce Panini which at £5:50 is a tad steep in my eyes but you do get a big side salad and plenty of time to enjoy it. No staff chasing you out to make way for other customers. The menu is pretty solid, no real wild cards but that’s why I enjoy my trips to the Metz, sometimes that familiarity is exactly what I want. Pros: Good food, good service. Cons: Pricey enough.

I love the strawberry and banana milkshake with the vegetarian option baked potato — I’m not a veggie but the description on the board sounded so good I couldn’t resist and I wasn’t disappointed. The spud came with a gorgeous side salad including a really tasty pasta and salad dressing. Lots of roasted vegetables were stuffed into a massive potato and a very generous piece of Brie melted on top. I’ve been back three times since and I always order the same thing. So tasty and the atmosphere is really nice with lots of local artists displaying their work and many tourists coming off the near by Belfast tour bus for tea and a tray bake. The parking is rubbish and so you need to park in the Inn Shops car park but if you are out and about in Belfast this is the place to top up the energy. The staff members are friendly, the food comes out quickly, and it’s very tasty and fresh, fresh, fresh!

I remember the good old days when I would be released from the prison of Orchestra rehearsal at lunchtime on a Saturday, and my Mum would meet me in the city centre and we would go here to get our lunch. It’s changed hands and names since then, but it’s still a well-run establishment, with a good menu and professional service. They do all sorts of dishes from a basic fry up to fish and chips, soups and salads, the menu is very extensive for a café. I’ve always found the service to be pretty damn good, and very prompt too. The meals are always well portioned and tasty, and the prices are fair too. I think it’s a good choice for any shoppers out in the city centre to stop off and grab a bite to eat that won’t break the bank.

The street Metz is situated on generally doesn’t have a wide range of good coffee shops, it’s generally populated by a few greasy spoons. Metz does the job as it were at providing good coffee at reasonable prices in a comfortable environment. I called in a few days ago after trying desperately to find wall pins for my apartment. I still haven’t found them. I had a large americano(or black coffee) and went for a blueberry muffin as well just to help soak up the caffeine riddled liquor. The staff were really friendly. Quick service, to the point. I sat on my netbook Googling for any retailers in the surrounding area for wall pins, still no luck. The place is great for a casual coffee and from what others have told me a well made sandwich. The coffee was hot and top quality, the muffin was muffiny. If you’re passing by certainly call in.
