And so, this was our last pub along the ale trail way. It was quiet, albeit a Thursday night, but once again is seriously easy to access from the station. And the quiet really means one of two things, a welcome peaceful drink, or a lack of atmosphere. For me, at this point, it was a welcome peaceful drink. The dark interior gives it an edge, and the chap behind the bar, whilst not stereotypically jolly for a landlord, was certainly really friendly. My companions were convinced to try a pickled egg, some of which enjoyed them, some of which did not. Pool is free on Thursdays, and so I asked the locals if we could grab a game, and they were kind enough to let us butt in for a quick one before heading off. I can’t remember if they offered a doubles match or not, but there was no hassle in enjoying a quick private game –I’ve been in places before where folks treat the table like private property, or certainly, claimed territory which you’ve to challenge them to access, but this is no such place. Really refreshing for a wee local. Basically, with plenty of taps, and a decent atmosphere, it’s well worth a look in –whether you’re visiting Batley, or doing the ale trail.

Now run by Mike Field who also has the West Riding Licensed Refreshment Rooms on Dewsbury Station and has just taken on the Sportsman near Huddersfield station. This is a speciality Real Ale Bar with about 6 rotating guest Beers and periodic beer festivals. Ideal location opposite the entrance to Batley Station and so an addition to the growing list of real ale pubs accessible by rail.(Please say hello to the pub cat for me!).
