We came here for dinner on a weekend stay in Bath. The pub below can get crazy busy and crowded, but the quaint restaurant upstairs is a great respite from the fray. We enjoyed our meals(traditional english fare) and drinks, and service was good!

We ate in the dining room on the 1st floor. The food and atmosphere was outstanding. The dining room is simply but elegantly decorated. The staff was very friendly. Ask for Deana, the general manager, she is a delight to talk to. We had sala0d and toasties for starters, both were delicious. The balsamic vinaigrette dressing was excellent and avoided the some times sharp taste you get at other restaurants. I had the Hake fillet with creamed leaks and buttermilk and chive mashed potatoes. Delicious through and through. We finished with a local cheese plate that included a local Bath soft cheese — yummy!

Stopped in here for lunch and a pint while in Bath. The selection of tap beers/ales is limited but they have their own bottled ale(Bath Ale) which is good. I ended up with a Guiness substitute and it was pretty good, can’t remember the name. Food is good too. I got a burger and asked for it medium and they said they can’t do it, but it came medium anyway. They forgot the chutney but it was still pretty juicy. The bartender/waiter was very helpful and friendly. Good place and laid back atmosphere, so I will return next time I am in Bath.

Great place to relax and enjoy some great food during your visit to Bath. The upstairs restaurant has great food. We enjoyed the lamb shepherds pie, the mac and cheese and some sandwiches. The upstairs is cozy and a nice place to relax and enjoy some great food.

Nice pub, featuring Bath Ales(my current favourite). My wife and I selected this for a rare ‘date night’ and were very pleased with the choice. Seated upstairs, very nice and roomy. Food was at the top of the league for pub food, and the portions were just right(not a huge quantity to disguise mediocre quality as at some pubs and chains). Well worth a visit.

Among all of the pubs I visited while I was in Bath, The Salamander was by far my favourite. Far from being old man-ish or studenty(as many of the other places we visited were) The Salamander was well-lit, busy and friendly. The real gem of this place, though, was the fact that it serves most(if not all?) of the Bath Ales either on tap or in bottles. I discovered that it’s not the easiest thing to find beers that I enjoyed in Bath, but I thought the Bath Ales were brilliant. If I ever find myself in Bath again, this is the first place I’m coming.

Stepped in for a quick drink before heading out to Komedia. The bartender was very friendly and helped us pick out a nice lager and cider that set us back about 7 quid. We sat at a small wooden table in the back of the ground floor, but there was still enough space to move around and have a comfortable chat. There was an eclectic mix of patrons — several small groups and even a fellow reading a book just hanging out. Salamander offers a very laid back atmosphere that’s not too loud.

good local ales and good vibe to the place. both upstairs and down always seem crowded and busy but on a winter evening squeeze to the bar and get some Bath Ales inside you. fantastic.

This is one of my favourite pubs in Bath, especially as it carries the elusive Bath Ales — on tap! Personally I think that Gem is the best beer in the west country. There is usually space in the back to sit and the food is not to shabby either.

Another wonderful Bath Ales pub. For someone my age(30+ as you asked :)) it has a nice blend of good atmosphere, great beer both bottled and draft, nice lighting and no sky sports!!!

It may look really small on first look from the outside, but remember that there’s an upstairs bit with a little more space for you and your mates. And while we’re the matter, they do a great pub quiz here once a week, which is well worth a crack. I love the range of great ales this place does most of all, and they tend to rotate them a fair bit to keep things interesting. My girlfriend attests to the quality of wine here, too, so it’s really quite a cool place for couples out for a drink before a gig or something. Chatting in relatively quiet surroundings is something you don’t get in many places nowadays.

If you’re looking for a selection of local ales and ciders, good conversation and friendly service there are two places in Bath I’d recommend for you; The Raven and The Salamander. The Salamander attracts a younger crowd than The Raven which means it can get a bit raucous on a Friday and Saturday night when finding a seat becomes your number one goal. Tucked away just behind the touristy high street, I always get the impression that The Salamander is a pub for locals. That’s not to say that tourists and visitors aren’t welcome here too! The drinks aren’t particularly cheap, but the range of what they offer is worth the money in my opinion. Great for smaller groups or couples, larger groups are probably best going to a bigger drinking hole.

The«new» Salamander is a shadow of its former self. On the plus side it’s generally not too busy and it serves some real ale, albeit only from the brewery that owns the pub. Not much in the way of character left now, but somewhere you can go for a beer and a chat.

Nice little pub that specialises in the idigenous Bath Ales. These can also be bought to take out as they sell gift packs behind the bar. Food looks very good but has a lot of localised competition from the Raven and the Firehouse Rotisserie next door. Friendly locals frequent the pub and the staff are also hepful too.

I totally agree with Evangreeen about the smoking ban making this place a brilliant cosy pub perfect for a few pints of excellent beer. It was our usual starting place and sometimes ending place while at university down there.

Probably my favourite pub in Bath. Its quite small but I like that. Does great real ale, but my favourite is their dark rum. No idea what its called, I always have to point to it!

The home of Bath Ales! Now the smoking ban is in place, this little haunt is even more attractive. Finding a seat has always been difficult but the great atmosphere and superb beers make the effort worthwhile. Upstairs is a small restaurant serving updated traditional english food and you can choose any of the drinks(real ales!) from the pub below. This place is one of the best experiences in Bath.
