Cripes. Over-priced tourist tripe just about sums up Badgers. Hardly a «must do» per other reviewers. If you’re up for a proper cream tea, don’t be fooled by the whimsical musings painted on the walls and look elsewhere. Was hoping for cream tea glory but got scones that tasted like they were out of a packet, not made ‘fresh’, and some so so sandwiches. Tea was fine, but that’s hard to mess up. £££ — mighty expensive.

This is ‘the’ must-do place when you’re out and about in the environs of East Sussex. The tea, scones and cakes are divine and you’d be hard pushed to find better anywhere. Make sure you try the Gooseberry and Elderflower Sponge which is as light as a feather, sandwiching a delectable elderflower cream and rich gooseberry jam. I could eat the whole cake, but alas I have scones to get through. I’m eternally grateful to the proprietor who makes sure that the muddy boots of walker’s stay at the door so I can can walk to my table comfortably, rather than slide to it(through goodness knows what… The set up is fabulous with lots of attention to detail — everyone has bone china and silver tea pots. I noticed a review by the lovely Gemma G who had her tea served in a tin pot — I’ve never seen that at Badger’s, or perhaps she kept her muddy boots on. .. .?

I would challenge anyone to find somewhere more quintessentially English than Badgers Tea rooms! The building itself is over 500 years old and has an rich history, mainly as the village bakery but also as a meeting place for«dissenters» from the local church in the late 18th century. The have a main room, a parlour and a delightful garden tucked away at the back. Walkers are invited to remove their muddy boots, children and dogs are welcomed as long as they behave, and smoking is prohibited even in the garden — yes there are rules, but this make for a pleasant experience for all. Tea is served in tin teapots, with bone china cups and saucers, every detail perfected even down to the delicately decorated teaspoons. Coffee is also available along with a wide range of home baked cakes, afternoon tea and fresh scones(the cheese and pecan scones are divine!) A full range of sandwiches, ploughman’s lunches and homemade soups are also available for those with a larger appetite, as well as a hearty breakfast menu if you arrive before 12. I would recommend a visit to the village of Alfriston to anybody, it is a picturesque and quaint gem tucked away in the Sussex countryside. Take a walk on the Downs, visit the local pubs, but make sure you save time for a pot of tea and a cheese scone at Badger’s!

Alfriston in East Sussex is the one of the quintessential English villages, and this is a quintessential English tea shop. You’ll be spoilt for choice if you stop by for morning coffee or afternoon tea as their range of cakes are legendary — and at lunchtime they do a fantastic range of light snacks. If you happen to visit after a muddy walk, be prepared to leave your boots at the door!
