A very pleasant riverside pub in a picturesque part of Abingdon, my four star review is largely driven by one simple fact: they served an excellent yet hard to find pint of Morlands Original, the flagship beer of former Abingdon-based brewery Morlands before its sad takeover by lacklustre pub chain Greene King. So ingrained in Abingdon’s history is Morlands that plenty of old pubs in and around Abingdon(including Sutton Courtney) still have Morlands murals on the walls by their doors, a sad reminder of Abingdon’s past brewing glory. This is particularly the case with the Old Anchor Inn, so I was glad to find its beer choice had been just as faithful. The friendly, quick service and pleasing wooden-panelled interior thus came as unexpected bonuses.
