I came the other night with my friend for a simple and quick neighborhood dinner. Heard about this place for a long time but never made it a priority until last night. The pickles had me at hello. My friend and I loved it so much we asked for more. Since there were only 2 of us, we only tried the Teochew goose liver x sliced goose meat and the Teochew mullet. The liver is very rich and creamy and the meat is very tasty as well. The marinate is not too long yet flavorful. Unlike some of the famous old store, the marinate didn’t give off that«aged» feel but I actually prefer it this way. My friend said the food is too heavy for her(she is constantly on diet) but it’s just right for me. In fact, I am so impressed I have made my next reservation. This time I am going with 9 other friends who have big appetites.(I even reserved some of the special marinated dish already!) We will see if it lives up to the hype.

I’m on a roll here– this is the second review of mine on a Chiuchow restaurant of the week. With the previous one, I had laid down the maxim that for Chiuchow restaurants to be truly great– they have to be grubby. And make no mistake this next location is equally as bad. Nestled away on a side street in Cheung Sha Wan, this is probably the last place you will look for one of the best Chiuchow restaurants on the dark side. After all, by day this place is mainly an industrial district that has little to offer in terms of culinary delights. By night though, this location transforms into a little hotspot of local culinary delights with a local«siu chao» shop opposite being the most famous around here. This particular Chiuchow shop opened up relatively recently and you could tell by the décor. Seating is a bit of a squeeze at best but at least its brightly lit and its air conditioned so you don’t sit outside. Howabout the food? The usual fare of marinated goose, oyster congee/pan cake are all very well done. To add to this, the shop offers a slightly unorthodox range of «pots» which is not regularly seen at Chiuchow stores; but these seafood /tofu pots are also excellent indeed. As I have said, this might not be the best one in Hong Kong but the price also reflects this being a notch down from Shun Hing in Central. However, the food itself already makes up for the bad seating, so-so hygiene and I will be more than happy to visit again soon.
