Very traditional congee place, i found all my memories here, minced beef congee, 腸粉,牛脷酥,soy bean milk… everything. taste good… It’s a bit hot because the place doesn’t have much air conditioning, but it sure worth the sweat

There is nothing better than to walk 7 blocks down the street at 5am in Hong Kong just to get some authentic porridge and yaotiao(Chinese donut) Crispy and fresh out of the fryer yaotiao is impossible to find in the states. The breakfast was about 70RMB for 4 people, which was $ 10 in the states. WHAT? Impossible find in Los angeles. Walked back with a hot porridge filled belly in cool Hong Kong air. Ahhh. the best! This little restaurant has been here since as long as my parents can remember. It was a childhood favourite place for my parents, took my sister and I here when we were younger, and now it is a staple place for me to grab some delicious breakfast. This place has history and it can’t be given up for anything. Doesn’t hurt that the food is also delicious. Thank you tseun wan!

As with most people, my recollection of this place goes back to the days when my father took me here. Being a young kid I hated congee, I felt that only people who were ill had congee and anything to do with it was not kosher for me. Fathers being fathers, of course I had to eat it. But back in the day I dreaded the thought of coming here because I really did not like the stuff here. Fast forward some twenty odd years later, I found myself wondering one morning what I should have for breakfast– then the revelation came. I actually wanted some good old fashion congee and cheung fun(rice pastry). The first place that I thought of was this place in Tsuen Wan; to my relief it was still there and pretty much just as I remember it. You sit there on the street corner and you will have to share your table with others. There are a million different combinations of congee though the beef congee is a favourite. With some chow mein and cheung fun(sweet sauce please) it brought back the old days and now I understand the appeal of this stuff. Too bad my young one is too young to have it but I doubt he would like it much; not for another thirty years anyways. This place is really convenient being in them middle of Tsuen Wan, bus, mtr, loads of parking spaces nearby. You don’t have to eat it here as you can take it away but my advice would be to stay in as the stuff goes cold quickly. There are also some fried dough stick(yau ja gwaai) and you can use it as a dip to go with the congee. Your bill should be no more than 30HKD per person and that, to me, is a trip down memory lane indeed.
