Great complimentary breakfast inclusive with my stay at the 99 Bonham Hotel. Very nice and polite service. I will come for lunch next and sample some traditional Bangers & Mash! The Chicken Tika Masala looks good too. Looks like they have well stocked bar also for after hour spirits. Very pleasant and convenient. Definitely come back!

The Cottage Gastro pub serves excellent British fair, possibly the best Fish in Chips I’ve had around the world. Most of the ingredients are typical English/American. Beer options are somewhat limited but they have Guinness and Cider. Try the fish and chips and a Black and Tan beer.

The great thing about Sheung Wan during the lunch hour is that there is a whole range of restaurants suitable for any mood, weather, day, or fancy. Which also, as it turns out, at times proves to add another decision onto the already decision-filled table. Better too many than too few, I’d like to think! After walking around for close to 15 minutes in the area we stumbled upon this little pub. I was immediately attracted by the menu the music that was playing, don’t we all wish our lives had a soundtrack? That’s the power of music. «More than a feeling» by Boston was the real hook. So we walked in and were greeted by a accommodating waiter, the only one in the room. He sat us down and gave us the lunch menus. I went for a cheeseburger after seeing a petite Chinese woman hide behind one and my partner in crime ordered the chicken tikka masala curry. Our lone waiter was obviously overworked as he brought out our drinks and salads separately, first mine, then hers, then mine, then hers. It was a strange way of providing but I can only assume it was because the place was so busy at the time. Then the food arrived. The curry was missing rice, because they had ran out, and so came with chips, which isn’t bad thing… unless you were looking forward to rice. It tasted good, nothing to write home about. The Cheeseburger was a massive disappointment. The bread broke apart while I was eating it as if it hadn’t been properly defrosted… The meat and chips were average, especially for the $ 150 it set me back. Were it not for the music or the overworked waiter I would have given this a lower rating. I can’t understand why it was so popular, maybe we had a bad day? I don’t think I’m going to try again!

Sheung Wan is a delightful mix of local flavours, sights and smells. Bags of tradtional spices and Chinese medicine shops line the streets, and make for some great photos as well as endless material for the«guess what that is» game. It all looks very exotic, so for a meat and potatoes girl like me, The Cottage is a bit of oasis, a little slice of familiar territory. The Cottage calls itself a gastro pub. It’s not. It IS a very nice place to eat a good breakfast and decent pub fare with a good beer and very comfy surroundings, but I think the establishment is mislabeled and thereby doing itself a disservice. Granted, my benchmark for gastropubs was set in Melbourne, which, arguably, lays claim to defining the genre, so the food does tend to push a few boundaries. But I’m not a fan of bone marrow or sweetbreads so more traditional food is fine by me so The Cottage is by no means off my dining list.
