Super Super Congee & Noodles

As a supposedly world class university, HKU sure doesn’t have the best dining options. The canteens are always crowded around lunch times and the food isn’t even that great. One restaurant that isn’t terrible is Super Super, a congee and noodle restaurant.
I’ve always been a little thrown off by the name Super Super — the restaurant is called 一粥麵 in Chinese, directly translating to ‘one congee noodle’, which makes sense because that’s what the restaurant serves. But Super Super? My rant aside, Super Super is just like any other restaurant/​café at HKU around lunchtimes — packed. It’s hard to find a seat, and having to wait around for one is normal. Super Super actually has some tables outside the restaurant, so you can choose to dine alfresco if you want (and if there’s an available table).
The wonton noodles here are pretty standard — not great, but definitely not terrible. It’s served piping hot, the soup isn’t overly salty (though is a little oily) and the shrimp wontons are nice and tender. I find that the noodles are a little hard though, but my friends insist that they’re perfectly fine and that I’m just being picky.
I’m not a fan of the fishball noodles here — my first time here, that’s what I ordered and I found that the fishballs and the fishcakes tasted weird and kind of stale! I remember finishing all my noodles, but only touching one fishball and one fishcake. The carrot cake here is pretty popular but I don’t really like it. It has a very obvious ‘this-​was-​stashed-​in-​the-​freezer-​and-​microwaved-​for-​a-​minute-​and-​a-​half’ taste. It’s really starchy in texture and doesn’t taste much like carrot cake.
Overall, Super Super is not the worst you could have at HKU. The quality of the food is a hit-​or-​miss, but it’s tolerable. The food is all at wallet-​friendly prices and it’s located conveniently on campus, so that’s mainly what keeps me coming back!
