Shanghai Tang is a really cool brand and retail store, selling menswear, womenswear, household items, and gifts. There are a number of stores dotted around Hong Kong, and internationally, but their flagship store in Duddell Street is probably your best first port of call. To be honest, I’m not a huge fan of the Shanghai Tang clothing range, it’s just not to my taste. I do however own a polo shirt from them, so you can take what I just said with a pinch of salt! What I particularly like in Shanghai Tang is the home-wares and gifts. I’m a big fan of lacquered things, and Shanghai Tang has no shortage of lacquered things. Everything from boxes, to coasters, to chopsticks, to decorative plates, the list of lacquered items is nearly endless. Of course, not everything is lacquered, they have a wonderful range of crockery, cutlery, fabrics, photo albums, engraved glasses, etc., etc. If you can afford to shop in the home wares department of Shanghai Tang, you will have a very well decorated home. On the gift front, there are many small items which make great tourist souvenirs, as well as presents for loved ones. I recently went through a phase of giving all of my friends enamel cufflinks and silk scarves, and Shanghai Tang has no shortage of these. I do find the products quite expensive, but I also believe that you’re paying for the high quality of them. I have never seen Shanghai Tang brand items copied in the markets of Hong Kong, which I find very refreshing. It’s definitely worth it to pick up a few small things, as I’m sure you would enjoy what they sell. If you are feeling very flush, you can join the loyalty scheme which gives you a percentage discount, but only after you have spent a certain level which I believe is HK$ 20,000.
