A small quiet place when I had dinner but that’s probably because I was pretty late. I had a mix of skewers of Angus beef, corn, large prawn, Hokkaido scallops, chicken wings and mushrooms. Overall very well seasoned and the free vegetables upon ordering was a plus. I did order a miso soup but it never arrived but not fussed. Dinner cost just under $ 400 which included a beer.

My go-to robatayaki/yakitori place. It was crazily busy in the early days, but now I can quite get a table on a weekday just by calling them an hour ahead(usually). The quality has been top-notch and I got no complain with the food at all. When you first arrive, the greeting may feel subpar — when I am ALWAYS greeted by servers(locals or actual Japanese) with«irasshaimase» in literally all Japanese restaurants, I’m pretty spoilt. Here they would greet you with«do you have a booking?». But as soon as you are seated, the service is actually good. Food — to maximize the number of dishes we can try, we often go for two separate dinner sets, and we share between us. Their set is very decent and will not make you feel like missing out anything in the a la carte menu. My picks? Foie gras, ox tongues, chicken wings, porks, pretty much all the meats they make are good. The BBQ sauce maybe too salty for some of you, so some times I’ll just have the skewers without the sauce. Usually I’ll be like 110% full for the full set, so skipping the miso soup is not too bad a choice(and miso soup in HK is never as good as those in Japanese anyway). The sake selection here is pretty good too. But I’ll recommend a 300ml bottle instead of a 750ml bottle, as you are guaranteed to be too busy eating. If I have to nitpick a bit, you can’t really call the seating comfortable here. It’s more a traditional Japanese robatayaki spots, tiny and tidy, but nothing fancy.

Wow! My wife and I just spent 4 days visiting Hong Kong and this was our favorite meal. Loved everything we ordered… chicken wings, chicken skin, beef tongue, asparagus with prosciutto. I can’t remember it all, but everything was spectacular. I never would have thought I’d like Beef Tongue so much, but apparently it depends on the cut that you get and they use the most tender part. Everything is super fresh. Prepared that day. We usually follow a Paleo Diet at home, but don’t sweat it when we travel. We want to experience all kinds of cuisine. Well, this place is basically Paleo since everything is fresh and most skewers are simply done with salt and a little pepper or spice. It’s the real flavor of the food that shines. Excellent service. Great vibe in the restaurant. It’s definitely a small place, so I’d recommend reservations. On our last day in HK, my wife said, «If we were here one more day, we’d definitely go back to Nan Tei for another meal.» We ended up going late night for some snacks after our drinks. We became huge fans of Hong Kong on this trip. A friend who lives locally took us on a culinary adventure around the city for 4 days. Nan Tei was our favorite meal.

Nan Tei has been my favorite yakitori restaurant in Hong Kong since 2008. This has always been my go-to spot with my best friend every time we meet for dinner. After coming here for a few times, we never even had to look at the menu. We always ordered the same stuff… beef, beef tongue, chicken wings, pork with asparagus, grilled corn, etc. Occasionally, we would order some specials that are listed on the wall. One of the items that I always order if the skewers aren’t enough is the grilled rice ball with eel.(Make sure you order it towards the end, otherwise it might fill you up!) The quality of the food never disappointed me. If you’re feeling up for some drinks, order some Asahi or some sake! The restaurant does not have many seats and they’re often fully booked during dinner hours. Make sure you call to book in advance!
