Just finished dinner at Mini Bangkok Restaurant. Speechless, food is so bad, service is horrible. I give one star because the system doesn’t accept zero star. Go to other restaurants close by that serve better Thai food than this place. The cooks are Hong Kong Chinese not Thai!!!

Mini Bangkok Hong Kong 小曼谷泰國美食 is located in the old school streets of Kowloon City, a land of many delicious eateries. The assuming façade offers anything but. Each dish has a kick and flavors are not diluted to suit the unadventurous. Mini Bangkok Hong Kong is one the best Thai restaurants in Kowloon City. There are line ups, long line ups. Deal with it. There are no fancy décor and dishes are monotonously in yellow plastic. Service is spotty, but we don’t mind. We’ve acclimated. There is no way in Vancouver, I can walk down my apartment, make a left and walk 5 mins to find an authentic Thai restaurant full of spices and character. I will find a park, perhaps a hungry bear waiting for my arrival. Green Papaya Salad: Shredded green papaya, basil, dried shrimp, mint, chili paste, chilies, crushed and sprinkled with chives and peanut all to host their flavor popping fish sauce. Satay Skewers: Beef and Pork Neck. How can we come here and not have satays. Moist and tender and slightly charred outside. Spicy Chinese Water Spinach 空心菜: A nice heated stir fried veggies with a dash of chili, garlic and dried shrimp. Deep Fried Sizzling Oyster Cake: Many complain that it is too fried, too dry on openrice but we disagree. There is a nice crunch and bite compared to the typical watered down, canned oysters cake. There are plenty of fresh oysters glazed in a flavorful batter and sprinkled with salt and pepper. Tom Yum Soup: Fresh aroma of lemongrass subtle drifts our way as the pot is brought to our table. Underneath we discover a few large head on prawns. The broth is dense although on the salty side. I would perhaps enjoyed it even more should they made it even spicier. The pot itself is difficult to scoop, there are odd corners the spoon would not fit. Fresh Young Coconut: Refreshing. Absolutely we would return to Mini Bangkok Hong Kong next time we are in town! Although there is a newer, cleaner, more comforatable newly opened sister Mini Bangkok BBQ around the corner on Boundary Road, I would still probably prefer the uncomfortable stools, flawed décor hole in the wall.

Barbecued Beef Spare Ribs(3 pcs): $ 35 reasonable price not spicy witout sauce bit it didn’t give any surprises. Chicken Satay 2pcs $ 24: The chicken was tender and tasted nice with the sweet sauces provided. Spicy & Sour Beef Brisket Salad $ 55: It was not expensive because it came with lot of boiled beef brisket. The chili sauce was slightly sour not that spicy. Jellyfish & sliced chicken salad in Thai Style $ 65: The jelly fish and chicken salad was good not too really spicy but come up with lot of jelly fish and a little bit of chicken.

This shop, translated means Little Bangkok, could be used to describe the entire Kowloon City area. This district probably has the highest concentration of Thai restaurants anywhere in Hong Kong and word has it that as Thais got off the plane in Kai Tak in the past, they just settled in the nearest place they could find. I’m not sure how much of that is true, but it is certainly true that if you came here looking for Thai restaurants you would be spoilt for choice. How is it then, you may wonder, that this place always has queue outside– even when its like 35c out there? In short– value. The shop itself is not decorated all that much, if anything it looks a bit run down at times. The staff are certainly to some extent because I couldn’t understand what they were saying between themselves(might just be me). The seating arrangement is quite packed and you have to pray that you don’t sit next to someone who has been queuing for a bit too long and perspiring quite a bit. The menu came as a surprise because everything here is so cheap and the fact that is tastes really good. A couple of must trys here include the satays(the dip plays a big part), the raw prawns(yum…) and the grilled seafood which I absolutely loved. Now I’m not saying this could beat something made on a beach in Phuket but at this price you really cannot complain. The chicken feet salad was a bit of disappointment though, it wasn’t hot or sour enough and it just felt a bit warm… I guess that worry too many people as it is a bit of a delicacy. Give me a bottle of Changi beer and this will complete my Thai experience somewhat. Even though I am in Kowloon City, there are no elephants, no Buddha’s and I have to work tomorrow morning. Bubble burst.
