A good intro 101 for all coffee fanatics! We sampled two types of brewing method — chemex and steam punk — using the TCA very own Panama coffee bean. We even got complimentary cakes to enjoy after our coffee session and a sample of the Panama bean to bring home. Our instructor is very knowledgeable and very patient with all our questions. A lot of us actually went to the wrong location but I guess that’s the point of holding the event here at the new Wan Chai Road location… now I know there is another TCA here!

This is my first time going to a coffee brewing and tasting event. Knowing very little about coffee, this has been a very valuable coffee 101 to me: P. Thanks Kevin for organising this event with the popular Coffee Academics. Very conveniently located at the heart of Wan Chai — great way in introducing this new branch to more people as most only know about the old branch at Johnston Road. The barista has given us some basic introduction to coffee. It’s interesting to know the origin of the coffee used by Coffee Academics, how they roast the beans and the frequency. Then the barista showed us two ways of coffee brewing — using the Chemex«hourglass» and the steam powered machine. Then we tasted the coffee brewed using the different methods, which has been a good experience to exchange views with the other Unilocalers. After that we even have more detailed discussion on the other coffee brewing technique like aeropress, french press — such a knowledge boost to me! It was an enjoyable and useful event. And we all have taken away a little can of panama coffee bean by checking in, good chance for me to try out brewing coffee at home :)

My 200th review! ! When I checked the elite events page for Hong Kong, I didn’t really expect it to fall on one of the 5 days that I’d be there but it did! I had to RSVP; Kevin was gracious and kind and welcomed this tourist and her sister. Awesome. We actually showed up at the wrong one(oops) but luckily the correct location was merely 10 minutes away. An intimate area by the front was roped off for the elites and their +1s. Apparently this is the newest Coffee Academics location to spring up – it’s only been around since this past January. Tonight’s event was on the informative side, with Herman — the coffee master at this store front — schooling us all on coffee FAQs, misconceptions, brewing methods, etc. There’s so much to know! We got to sample two blends from Panama that he brewed for us. For bites, there were cookies and cake offered. Unfortunately, my sister and I had eaten triple our daily values in fat and sugar from steamed milk at Australia Dairy Co. so we decided against sampling the sweets. We got to meet some cool HK elites so that was a great plus. Anyways, I’m still no coffee connisseur but I’m glad I got a chance to check this out — thanks Unilocal HK, Kevin and Coffee Academics!
