Decent prices, Doritos nachos, comfy seats, hilarious biker dudes, warmth from Hong Kong’s winter

They had the Rugby World Cup on TV with sound and they had cold beer, which was all I really needed. Clientele was mostly westerners with a few skeevy old dudes and their much younger girlfriends, but I could see how this could tip in either direction depending on what’s going on in the bar. I paid about $ 100HKD($ 13USD) for two beers, so it was pretty reasonably priced and the post-match playlist was damn near perfect.

Another Wan Chai spot on Lock Hart Road, Devils Advocate caters to the older, more sophisticated man — that is until you see their partner, normally a Filipino lady half his age. Then he becomes an older man with an appetite. Don’t let that dissuade you from entering the place, if you’re lucky enough one of the cushioned leather booths are still available! I actually had a couple drinks there the other night. It was a Wednesday night and I needed something to do before the 4am football match. Most of the other bars were loud, sweaty, and filled with drunk teenagers(tempting for some?). The Devils Advocate, more commonly known as Devils, appeared a quieter choice where a couple friends and myself could sit down, drink and actually hear the words coming out of each other’s mouths. We stationed ourselves in one of the three booths and within moments was approached by a very accommodating English waiter. He pointed out that if we had any twenty-dollar notes from the Standard Chartered bank we could exchange them for a drink. I had one, saving about forty dollars… boom! The music was pleasantly low, playing the most popular songs of recent times, allowing us to make bets on the winner of the football match. We only planned to stay for one drink but you know what one drink means. It was comfortable, affordable and the service was above average so we milked the experience for as long as we were sober. Two vodka-waters(Strange mix but helps with the hangovers!) and a shot later we finally settled the bill and left. As we were leaving the manager invited us to stay for the football match. Had we not had plans already made it would have been a tempting option, knowing that in the future will surely come in handy. In brief, if you’re looking for a quieter place for a cheeky pint then look no further than Devils — just don’t except anything crazy to spontaneously happen without you having to start it.
