One of the best things in Hong Kong is food and one of the best foods I find is noodles! Especially Hong Kong cart noodles! Hong Kong cart noodles probably dates back to a long time ago but it is definitely a historic, cultural food that is a staple of Hong Kong. I imagine back in the days, people would roll out their carts with options as toppings on their noodles and people will line up to eat it. It’s so popular that there are cart noodles everywhere in Hong Kong. In Cantonese it is called che zai meen. Literally translated into, cart noodles. The particular store I love is located in causeway bay on Jaffe road. You can smell the toppings brewing from the kitchen. You sit down usually sharing a table between strangers given space is limited,(these joints are always packed,) and you are given a piece of paper to choose your toppings on your noodles a la carte style. Kind of like dim sum! There is everything from vegetables to pork blood, intestine, curry fish balls, beef tendons, tripe etc. These toppings all have their own flavour and is added on top of your noodles of choice. You can choose either wide, thick or thin, rice or flour noodles and your soup base is also an option as well. Usually spicy, clear or beef broth. Everything is picked to your preference and then it is served in a hot bowl with your noodles piping hot with exactly the toppings you chose in the soup base you wanted. Doesn’t that sound lovely! Love cart noodles. It’s the Hong Kong part of me and I am proud of it!
