After walking all day in San Juan, this was a great spot! We enjoyed the delicious drinks and the meal specials. We recommend Tropical Taste while you’re visiting San Juan.

Authentic. Flavorful. Fresh. Hidden. This place is tucked away in the back of a gift shop. The food was awwwwesome, prob the best we’ve had thus far in PR. I’m very glad for this recommendation. I had the spicy chicken, tostones, rice and beans. My cousin has the porkchop with similar sides. Both dishes were amazing. Be sure to stop by.

The food here is exceptional. Very well seasoned, reasonably priced – so delicious. I got Jueyes(a crab dish) with mamposteao and mashed green plantains. I would eat here again any time. Worth the walk.

This afternoon I dined with my wife and five friends at Tropical Taste Restaurant in Old San Juan. I was a little reluctant at first, as it is located in the rear of a clothing store. To my amazement, the service and food was excellent. I ordered the fried red snapper with some sort of special rice with bacon, beans and onions… excellent. If you are in Old San Juan, you have to try this spot.

Fast friendly service and very good tostones, therefore two stars. Prices high for a hole in the wall. Main condiment on all their dishes is salt. They had a sign offering a free Coquito shot if you gave them a five star rating on Trip Advisor. No Coquito for me today.

Tucked away behind a shop that sells PR items(guayaberas, touristy stuff), the food was fresh and perfectly cooked.

My husband and I were looking for places to eat while in PR, when we stumbled upon this little gift store with a hidden restaurant. I didn’t know what to expect from this place until my food got to the table. Boy was I in LOVE with everything I ordered ! The food was indeed over the top(flavored like how my abuela used to cook) and the service was great. Must go whenever I’m in PR again !

Loved the fresh squeezed limeade(which they call lemonade) and the spicy shrimp. Portions were a little on the small side, but everything was very tasty. Location is not easy to find — you have to walk through a store to the back room.

Great Puerto Rican food in a cute hole in the wall venue. Came twice in one week! Pulled pork is great and so are the drinks.

The Unilocal is definitely overrating this restaurant. It’s kinda fast food taste for pasta and soup. Very disappointed.

After a few hours at Castillo San Felipe del Morro we headed into Old San Juan for lunch. I found Tropical Taste on Unilocal. This little hole in the wall is tucked behind a gift shop/boutique store. Twelve tables in a sunken room leading out to a garden are a perfect setting. We ate conch, pasta, shrimp and crab with plantains, rice and beans, sauteed veggies and salad. All were worth the time spent at lunch. Tropical Taste is definitely worth a visit.

We were hungry, tired and it was raining. We wanted some real Puerto Rican food and this place said it was«authentic» It was the first place we saw with Puerto Rican food after visiting the morro. We ordered the surtadito, mofongo with carne frita and the pulpo in garlic sauce with mamposteo rice. We also had the sangria. The pulpo was too salty, the sangria was 80% ice and the alcapurrias were tiny. The mofongo was ok, nothing extraordinary. I’ve definitely had better. The mamposteo was good, I really do recommend it. Maybe this place is good for someone not familiar with Puerto Rican food, but for me(married to a Puerto Rican) I definitely did not feel this was authentic. For the price that I paid, it wasn more for the location than the food. It was almost painful to see the bill for the food that we got.

Perfect lunch here! It may be hard to find the place but you will need to walk through the store. We ordered the perfect mamposteao rice along with fleck steak and chicken. We also order delicious mojito drinks! They also have fabulous spicy yellow sauces which they will not sell. Highly recommended to come here! Well done!

Do yourself a favor and come and enjoy this restaurant. It’s delightfully authentic and the food is very well done. I had the octopus and it was exceptional. The atmosphere is unique and inviting. Walk past the open air places and through the gift shop to find it. It’s worth the deeper look. Service was slower than expected for the 4 others who were in the restaurant but it to worry. Take your one and enjoy.

The octopus plate is fantastic! It’s officially the best thing I’ve eaten in San Juan all week! The restaurant looks slightly dubious on the outside… It’s tucked in the back of a t-shirt shop. To get to the restaurant, one needs to walk through the entire length of the shop. Once inside, the space is very cute. Unpretentious place and feels a lot less touristy than the other places on Old San Juan. Waitress is very friendly too.

We enjoy«hole in the wall» food places and stumbled amongst this hidden spot in the back of a souvenir shop of all places. We ordered the pernil with rice and beans and tostones. It was delicious. It far exceeded our expectations by looks and location but never judge a book by its cover!

Found this place while walking around Old San Juan. You have to go thru to the back of a souvenir shop to get to it. The food and service were great. Everything on my plate was delicious! I had the Pernil(Puerto Rican style pulled pork) with tostones and rice and beans. The beans came in a little dish separate from the rice, so I immediately just poured them right on top. I also had a glass of mango juice with my meal, which was wonderful! The only star deduction was for the state of the bathroom, which was a little dingy and the soap bottle was all but empty. I don’t make a big deal out of this here, though, since I’m always prepared when I travel with anti-bacterial gel. Any place back home, though, and it would be unacceptable. Still, I highly recommend this place. I thoroughly enjoyed it!
