Beautiful pieces that represent both the feel of the island and culture that is hidden in the middle of tourism

Wandered in on a whim earlier today(mainly to escape the heat). The museum was hosting three exhibits. The first one was of a modern artist, the second was of a classical artist, and the third was a collection of Caribbean art owned by the Cortes chocolate family. All three exhibits were fairly small with the Caribbean collection being the most extensive(and engaging) of the three. The price can’t be beat(free) and the art was interesting. Give it a try!

Spectacular exhibit of contemporary Puerto Rican art. A stunning display of intensity and inspiration that rivals any that I have seen. The Marco Polo exhibits has wonderful use of photos as well as artifacts from that time and place.

Located in the Old«Plaza del Mercado» in El Viejo San Juan this museum showcases audiovisuals and multiple art installations. After the initial presentation you are escorted to each installation by an usher who remains in close proximity and can answer questions as needed. The rooms are temperature controlled, the museum is quiet, clean and well organized. As the usher guides you into each room they give you a small introduction to the general theme of the particular exhibition. My favorite part of the museum is the current works by the best and well known Puerto Rican contemporary art community. Enjoy the collection of Santos, carved in wood by local artists examples of devotional folk art in Puerto Rico and admire the samples of some of the oldest pieces of local art. The museum is never too crowded since most people walk by the front of the historic building unaware the treasure that lies within. The admission is free.
