Restaurante Palmeira

A nice find in Porto. This place is in a basement, but it’s brightly lit. The décor is rather aged, but it’s not worn nor dirty.
Our waiter is courteous and speaks good English. They have a menu in four languages. There are several types of Bacalhau, the national dish of Portugal. We ordered the tripe stew w beans, chorizo, pork belly and carrot, which supposedly is a well known dish of Porto. We also tried the kid goat baked w potato which is very flavorful. Prices are great: grilled sole half portion is less than € 10, for example. Not to mention that dishes comes w side of rice and even sauteed green. For wine most of the half bottles are under € 5, perfect for two light drinkers, though at that price you certainly can try several bottles.
Maybe it’s the old school service, maybe it’s the great value, but we found ourselves the youngest of all diners there. I’m willing to bet that we are the only non-​retirees, among all the locals, Germans, Brits and French and customers of other nationalities. In fact, we had a game… someone walked down the stairs, and we’re like, ok, the average age is now 75… oh no, 80… now, 73?
That said, I hope I won’t have to wait till my retirement to be back, as it’s one of those places that serves up honest, authentic dishes at a great price.

Good Portuguese food. Simple good vegetable soup. Good service. Polite helpful but did not pressure. Bright basement. No line. Tasty steak, salad was lettuce onion and tomato with vinegarette dressing. Local white wine fresh and dry. Recommend it. € 35 for two eating one entrée, soup, salad, wine, and sparkling water.

The restaurant is near the Abidas restaurant. It is downstairs but well lighted and attractively decorated with a beautiful ceiling.
Good Traditional Portugese fare. We had the grilled cod for one and the roasted chicken for one and both were served with potatoes and a plate of green beans. The cod potatoes weren’t hot but the potatoes with the roasted chicken were roasted and hot. The beans were very good.
Overall good value.
