De Mug is a Middelburg classic. It’s one big brown boost of atmosphere, spreading out over about five 16−18th century buildings on the corner of Vlasmarkt and Kromme Weele. I haven’t tried the food in a while, but if that hasn’t changed it’s probably still pretty decent food for a pretty decent price. Some classical French dishes on the menu, some varieties on classics by chef Lanny. Expect to pay about 18 – 23 euros for a main course. They usually have about three veggie main courses around 15 euro. The two room bar is situated right in the corner building and is as close to legendary as a Middelburg bar can get. About 150 mostly Belgian beers on bottle, around 10 on tap. Very diverse crowd: students talking over a chestnut wine, 80+ couples dancing to the monthly live music, estate agents discussing politics with taxi drivers, etc. The only reason not giving them 5 out of 5 is their beer prices and availability; quite a few beers on their menu seem to be permanently out of stock and paying over 7 euros for a Rochefort 10(retail around euros) is close to ridiculous.
