This place is not just a meal… it’s an experience! This place has made its mark over the past 30+ years mostly via word-of-mouth. You leave feeling so happy because everything was just great. We were window shopping for dinner today and stumbled across this one. The daily specials looked good, and the atmosphere inside was just so different than all of the modern and upscale al fresco places around town that had tons of seating. Atmosphere 5÷5− Absolutely whimsical. A dark bar with low lighting, old and heavy wooden tables and chairs, magazine racks crammed with fun travel magazines and kids books, and just a bunch of fun décor going on. Service 5÷5− The charming woman that serves you owns the place. Her husband does the cookin’ in the back. She is one of the wittiest people I’ve met on this journey. Full of kindness, friendship, and good service. Speaks English and cracks jokes in English like a boss in this restaurant! Food– — French onion soup 4÷5− So affordable! A huge serving for 4.5 Euros. Cheese and bread are actually served on the side, but I dunked mine in so that the cheese would get all melty. This soup is so different from classic French onion that I’ve had. A little confusing on the taste buds with hints of cinnamon and background spices that almost seem Indian… — Mushrooms and toast appetizer– 5⁄5 Crisp toast squares topped with mushrooms, sautéed garlic, and herbs. Served with a wonderful side salad of beets, multiple types of tomatoes, mixed greens, and asparagus. — Samosas– 3⁄5 These are made using a spring roll wrapper and served with a sweet chili sauce and the same side salad the mushrooms had. Filling was a little plain for what I was expecting. — Rhubarb trifle– 5⁄5 Dessert du jour. You want to talk about me falling in love? Guys, I need a second to myself as my heart breaks. Rhubarb with perfectly airy bites of lady finger, cream, and a scoop of ice cream. I wish I wasn’t leaving so that I could relive this. — Apple pie a la mode– 5⁄5 I figured I should get Dutch apple pie while in Holland, right? So I did. Served with cinnamon and whipped cream, this made a fabulous not-too-sweet bite. — We initially planned on ordering the chicken and mushroom pie, but we were so full! The owner kindly waited for us to finish our apps so that we could decide if we still needed more food… we didn’t! Everything about this place makes it a 5. I loved the atmosphere, the amazing and wonderful service, and the rustic comfort food. It felt like you were coming home… now how does it get better than that?

Update: took some friends in here for a drink at the bar and the owner was incredibly rude to us. She was annoyed that we had only come in for a drink and not to eat as well. I will never go back here again. The drinks are overpriced anyway.

Finally decided to go to the famous café De Bok. Quite a few people have been telling about the place for ages, so we decided to go and have a full English breakfast. Normal size or Gert’s special… Just went for the second one… Delicious and plenty on the plate. As usual, but that’s me, I could have eaten more bacon ;-)(though for any normal person, it’s more than enough, and seeing how nice people are, I’m pretty sure I could have gotten more if I asked for it) No clue about the rest of the food, but by judging other people’s plates, it looked delicious. Next time maybe. Concerning the place itself, it feels like one of those little countryside pub, cosy atmospehere, old wood, where one would as well have a breakfast, dinner, or a few pints of beer with friends :)
