The best apple pie I’ve ever had — came here two times during a three day trip. That crust and that whipped cream… wow. Still thinking about this pie.

We stopped in hoping to get some dinner and apple pie around 10PM but only ended up getting the pie as the kitchen was closed. It’s hard to say if this was the best apple pie I’ve ever had but it was pretty damn good and worth checking out if you’re close but I don’t think it’s worth more than a 15 minute walk. Service was ok but the bartender was flirting with some girls most of the time so it was a bit hard to get his attention.

Cute atmosphere. Snagged a great corner table inside to enjoy the apple pie and popular mint tea. Was a bit quiet on a Friday night when I arrived about 830pm but got completely full shortly after 9pm. Short visit but enough to take in the crowd and enjoy my visit. Apple pie was good(you would think I absolutely loved it as I only left crumbs), but since i had high expectations of it being«THEBESTTHINGEVER,» I found myself a bit disappointed that I wasn’t overly obsessed with it. Crust is good weight and I enjoyed the ratio of the filling and crust. Whipped cream was fantastic. There is no actual tea bag for the Mint tea which was interesting. It was simply hot water and a bunch of fresh mint. I loved the simplicity in that — Great accompaniment with the pie especially on a rainy night. Service a bit slow, but I guess that was due to them getting flooded. Note: I had to actually get up and ask for my bill at the bar which is where I ended up paying.

I came here with friends after dinner, and we wanted to try traditional dutch apple pie! This place makes it in-house and it was so tasty, we ordered another slice! It comes with a dollop of whip cream, but I do wish that it was baked though, but still delish!

Oh my god. My hotel informed me that this was the place for the best apple pie in Amsterdam. So we showed up and waited about 10 minutes because the tiny café was completely full. Don’t worry guys, it’s worth the wait. The waitstaff are super cute and friendly and acknowledge your presence. They work hard to get you seated right away. Service itself is very quick as well. My husband and I both ordered coffees and individual apple pie slices. It comes with a side of cream if you wish, and you definitely want it. DELICIOUS — every bite either melts in your mouth in a smooth creamy apple-scented heaven, or the crust is chewy and full of flavor. I loved it. Make it a point to go.

I brought my cousin here from LA to try their famous apple pie. Sad to say she thought the apple pie was over-rated. Well too bad I will never know because I am allergic to gluten. However it is great place to sit outside when the weather is good. Plus a great neighborhood to explore and venture around.

Yes, Apple pie! I love my apple pie and definitely glad that we found this place on our last night in Amsterdam. Given bad information that they had already closed, we were happy to stumble across an open Winkel at 9:30PM. Staff was extremely friendly. Spoke English, explained menu items, offered recommendations. Sounds like they promote from within and are truly dedicated to providing the best apple pies possible. We tried the ribeye which was one of the better steaks that we enjoyed in Europe and of course, we had to experience their apple pie(for which they are known). The apple pie was served room temperature warm but it didn’t matter. Large chunks of apple, thick crust, and truly could be shared with a friend or two.

I only had 2 days in Amsterdam, and wanted to try some authentic dutch food. This was such a great choice! It was recommended by my hostel as one of the top restaurants to hit up. I immediately noticed the homey-local vibe. It was dark, candlelit, and smelled of delicious apple-pie. The menu was on a chalk board and was not in english, but the waiter immediately came over with the giant chalkboard and explained the dishes. I got a dish with mushroom sauce and asparagus and puff pastry. It was delicious! I’m a huge mushroom lover, so the sauce was immediately a must-try for me. The sauce was the main star of the dish, so I was only a little dissappointed that the portion looked decieving and was actually quite small. OFCOURSE I had to try their dutch apple pie that they’re famous for. It was to die for: buttery and sweet, with a the perfect crunch of crust and balance of apple to crust ratio. This place is also really close to the Anne Frank house, so if you’re in the area, definately come check it out!

After traveling across Europe, I was so glad to have eaten here. It was the BEST food I experienced during my adventure. The steak entrée with mix veggies was absolutely delicious! The fresh, homemade Dutch apple pie was great too. It is open late night. The atmosphere was fun. The servers were helpful for us tourists. UNIQUE — THANKS for everything!

Delicious! Very friendly staff and great food. We had: Hot platter(bitterballen was the best!) — bitterballen, spring rolls, oriental shrimp and cheese sticks Hot chocolate with whipped cream and this delicious cinnamon biscuit. We were too stuffed for the apple pie but Winkel is really famous for it, so it’s not to be missed!

A quick 20 minute rain shower prompted me to take shelter at a picnic table under the side awning at Winkel 43. While I was waiting out the sprinkles, I decided it was time for a bowl of mushroom soup and a drink, but unbeknownst to me, as commented by most on Unilocal, this was THE place for apple pie in all of Holland. It was a Thursday afternoon and there were few others seated at the outdoor tables, so I didn’t spot the pie and being just a touch peckish, I didn’t want to indulge in dessert, as the soup was just enough, besides, I had a date with fries and mayo later on for dinner. After arriving back to my hotel room, I decided to see what others thought of the soup or if I had I missed out on other entrée options, boy, should I have ever had my my homework in advance. Review after review«You’ve got to try the apple pie», «The best ever!», «OMG, to die for!». What had I done? It was like going to France and not having foie gras or not super sizing my meal at American fast food outlets. The following day, after viewing picture after picture after picture of apple pie slices on Unilocal(and adding my own picture of the apple tart as well), I decided I would have lunch at Winkel 43 and order the pie before my meal, I mean, if it was that good, then I was going to be breaking all the rules. I seated myself at the counter and directly in front of me was apple pie central. A fresh pie would come up from the dumbwaiter every 10 – 15 or so minutes, that is how quickly people were ordering slices and it was clear, that was the apple pie capital of Amsterdam, perhaps the whole of the Netherlands. Slice after slice, covered in whipping cream was being carted off and soon it would be my turn. I overheard a customer ask a server how many tarts/pies were consumed in a day and she replied«a couple hundred». With no smartphone in hand to keep me entertained and brain dead, my mind started to wander … 200 tarts, 8 slices each per tart, 1,600 slices per day at 4.00 Euros each … holy tart and that’s not counting the glasses of hot water with five strings of mint in them. My tart arrived … clearly, the American customers to Winkel 43 likely only eat apple pie from McDonald’s and/or the supermarket Dolly Madison packaged pies, that can only explain the wild raves. The crust was clearly the crowning glory to this pie, baked to perfection, however, the apple filling itself, while yes, quite good and tasty, was so over hyped, so played up, that, well, I was just a touch disappointed. I know, those are blasphemous observations, but don’t get me wrong, it is a very good pie, it was just built up so much that my expectations were over and above what they should have been. Would I return for another slice? Yes, I would but at least now, I can manage my expectations.

Was recommended this place by a local for their apple pie. Yes, it was absolutely worth the hype. That pie is so freaking good. Something about the crisp crust. I wouldn’t have thought to have the pie with whipped cream, but it works. We actually came here two days in a row. First day was to eat dinner and get pie. Second day was purely for the pie. Since we came in the evening hours both nights, there was no problem getting seats. Dinner was actually pretty tasty and for the price, I think it’s a win. The menu is in Dutch but the waitstaff all speak English and were kind enough to translate the menu for us. Great mushroom soup.

¡Pues a probarla!

So my friends and I were roaming the city, and we were hungry. I had this place bookmarked but totally forgot about it. I just suggested this place because we were passing through and since it was like the last day, I was saying«damn I wanted to try the pie from this one place», popped opened my phone and it was this exact place, I was like«oh shit, we just somehow stumbled upon this exact place I was talking about haha» good times. And yes, the pie is definitely what you want to get here, it is delicious. They have outdoor seating like most of the restaurants, and they have some outdoor seating across the restaurant, which can be confusing because their tables are next to another restaurant that my friends and I actually sat at.

My husband and I end up around Westerstraat for one reason or the other, and while crossing Winkel 43 we would always notice loads of beautiful apple pies on everyone’s tables. Being dessert lovers we would always be staring but from the lack of space in our stomachs would end up leaving with disappointment on our faces. But yesterday my husband came home and immediately asked if I was in mood for dessert and i replied HELLYES! So we rushed to Winkel 43 — okay maybe we stopped over for some ice cream, but after that we were at the place ordering their famous apple pie! My only regret was having to share it with my husband. It’s honestly too good to share. So next time you’re there order your own! It comes with delicious whipped cream and has the most amazing aroma of cinnamon and apple and sugar and raisins! Ah yes! I really enjoyed it and will definitely go back!

Just yes to the pie. Have it with a coffee or a beer! Free tap water! Their famous apple pie is a combination of pie crust, graham cracker, and cake… Or so it seems. The apples are great because they aren’t thin slices that end up turning into a mush, and they aren’t too sweet. Combined with whipped cream and a sweetened pastry and a wash of coffee, that’s a damn good afternoon snack! Their real food doesn’t look that yum to me… I’d stick with pie for ultimate customer satisfaction!

Winkle is a great little bar on a canal street. As a tourist, it’s close enough to the touristy activities but far enough away that it was not crowded with tourists(and was occupied by several Dutch speakers), at least not during my visit. Besides beverages, they offer full meals and snacks. And of course, the apple pie(their only dessert)! This was the only food item I tried. Large chucks of spiced apple, cakey, thick pie crust and an option of whipped cream. The pie is not overly sweet, which I liked. The apple chucks were clearly from fresh, not processed, fruit. Try and grab a sidewalk table!

My first time at Winkle 43 was with a friend who moved to Amsterdam and I was visiting for the first time. She had highly recommended that I have these: APPLETAART(Dutch Apple Pie) — € 3,90 w/Whipped Cream. There is something extra special about this apple pie. It looks simple but it’s so good! You can see and taste the apples and raisins(not too many) all hugged into this amazing thick crust that reminds me of the muffin too part of a muffin – which is like the best part! I appreciated how this dessert wasn’t overwhelmingly sweet. It’s so delightful… I can see why the locals make a big deal of it! Oh and that tall pile of whipped cream… SOGOOD! MINTTEA — € 2,50 w/Honey. Be sure to ask for honey(they usually ask though)! This is a glass of fresh mint in hot water. That’s it! So simple yet something about it just hits the spot on a sunny breezy semi-chilly day for people watching. But most importantly – it goes PERFECTLY with the appletaart! The honey gives it an amount of sweetness to your heart’s desire. I dont normally have mint tea anymore, nor will I ever have mint in my dishes. but in this case, for some reason, Winkel is the right place to have some Mint Tea with honey. During my second visit 2 years later I had to come back! It was in the evening when I had this so it was nice to have sitting outside. I love this place so much I went back the next day during lunch and for the same duo. This time I added: CREAMYASPARAGUSSOUP — € 4,50 w/Chervil, Quail Egg and Bread. This hits the spot because although the sun was coming in and out, it was chilly and most of the seatings here are outdoors. Still a great day for people watching or reading a book! The soup is creamy and has chunks of white asparagus in it. There’s also a whole boiled quail egg(cut in half) in it. It was at the right amount of creaminess and saltiness. I’m so happy I decided to order this! Later that night I came back here for dinner. Yep… I’m obsessed. I even invited friends to come over so that they can have the appletaart and mint tea to try! But before the usual, This is what I had for dinner(off the chalkboard): STEAK — € 14,50 w/Potatoes, BBQ Sauce, Mushroom, Green Beans, and Cream Cheese. This dish was fine. You can’t expect this place to serve amazing steak. However, it was good enough. It had all the works: your veggies, your carbs, and a nice dallop of cream cheese(c’mon, its the Netherlands). The BBQ sauce was intersting but wasn’t needed. However, because I“m such a huge sauce person I still dipped my steak into it – mixed with cream cheese. I overall thought it was fine. SPINACH&GOATCHEESEQUICHE — € 10 w/Salad and Tomato Sauce. This was the most interesting quiche I have ever had. It’s because it didn’t’ really taste like one! I tasted mostly spinach, haha. It wasn’t bad. It tasted like the egg was there just to hold the spinach and cheese together. The cheese had a strong taste – which was not bad. I enjoyed the quiche. It’s just I’m more used to how quiches usually taste: an egg dish. Salad was salad and the tomato sauce was… your standard tomato sauce that would go great in spaghetti. So yeah within 2 days of my trip I’ve had the mint tea and appletaart 3 times. This place is known for that pie! The staff is super friendly, attentive and professional and friendly. Super friendly. Did I mention that? It’s nicely located if you want to be on your way over to the Anne Frank house or just around the canals. It also opens late which is a plus! Thanks Winkle for making my trip extra special! :)

Yes, the apple pie is amaaaaazing, but I know it and you know it and — it would appear — every human to touch down at Schiphol airport knows it too. Which is why if you want a table you’re gonna have to work for it. Which is fine, if you really really want that apple pie. Otherwise, there are a stack of other places in Amsterdam that also make a mean apple pie and have a more peaceful atmosphere.(Try het Scheepvaartmuseum. Bonus — they’re also a super cool museum!)
