Ter Brugge

This is a super cozy little café/​bar. The outside seating here is amazing on a nice evening, because the outside faces West so you get to soak in the rare Dutch sunshine if you get lucky. The food is above average, but typical bar food — lots of fried things. The bread is really good, and comes with three different spreads — tzatsiki, a tapenade, and some hummus. Service is friendly but a little slow.

We stopped here because it was one of the closest restaurants to our hotel (Fashion Hotel) and we were very hungry and tired. It is your typical café, what we’d call a bar and grill in the US. I had the steak and my wife had the burger. Both were cooked perfectly and were very tasty. It seemed like a hangout for locals and I think we were the only tourists there (they had an English menu but they had to dig it up from behind the counter). I find that a plus. If you’re looking for good, reasonably priced food (I think our dishes were around 13 euro each) this is a good place to stop. Just make sure you bring cash because they don’t take bank cards.

I have to attribute my discovery of Ter Brugge to serendipity. Even though «discovery» is used in the same manner as Christopher Columbus «discovering» America.
The locals already knew about it. They didn’t need any discovering.
I had seen Ter Brugge months before from the southern end of Vondel Park. It looked interesting from across the street but as time did not permit, I passed it by. This time I came across it after exiting Rembrant Park and decided to stop.
I am glad I did.
There is nothing special about this place but that is what makes it special. A typical gezelleheid Dutch café with all the right beers, snacks, sandwiches and light meals. Friendly in a Dutch sort of way and easy on the pocketbook.
A local hangout for sure.
Ter Brugge would make a good introduction to Dutch café culture. I recommend it highly.

Ter Brugge is gewoon een gezellig café waar je ook een prima sateetje of een burgertje kan eten. Het is eigenlijk een kroeg zoals er zoveel zijn in Amsterdam maar deze ligt redelijk aan de rand van de stad en heeft dus prima bestaansrecht. Als je in de buurt bent gewoon ff binnen rollen. Veel yuppen en studenten dus altijd levendigheid!

Schade, dass man hier Sterne vergeben muss.
Wir waren 3 Tage auf einem Kurztrip in Amsterdam. Unser Hotel befand sich schräg gegenüber dieser Kneipe. Da es dort immer sehr voll war und es auch recht einladend aussah, wollten wir dort am letzten Abend noch etwas essen. Wir fanden einen freien Platz und setzten uns hin. Es war recht laut, was aber nicht weiter störte.
Mit großem Hunger und Durst warteten wir auf die Bedienung, die nach ein paar Minuten, nachdem Sie unseren Nebentisch bedient hatte, wohl gemerkt haben muss, dass wir als neue Gäste in der Kneipe saßen. Leider saßen wir auch noch die nächsten 20 Minuten dort, ohne etwas zu Essen bzw. zu Trinken bestellen zu können. Die Tische um uns herum wurden bedient und es wurde auch immer wieder gefragt ob alles okay sei, bei uns wurde jedoch jeder Versuch die Aufmerksamkeit der Kellner auf uns zu lenken ignoriert. Wir wurden aus dem Augenwinkel beobachtet und jeder Blickkontakt wurde regelrecht verweigert. Lag es daran, dass wir deutsch gesprochen haben oder hatten sie einfach keine Lust und wollten nur ihre Stammgäste bedienen?
Nach 20 Minuten sind wir wieder aufgestanden und haben die Kneipe ‘ter Brugge verlassen.
Einmal und nie wieder!!!
