This square is where a crazy quilt of streets, trams and bike paths come together plus it’s bordered by a canal. Not a good place for a slow or distracted pedestrian. At the center of the square is the«Mint Tower» which was built in 1620 at the edge of medieval walled city and was the location of one of Amsterdam’s medieval gates. Some people who are in to that sort of thing think it’s funny to get a picture of the clock at 4:20 pm with the buildings date of 1620 underneath. The date of 1620 equates to 4:20 pm and 420 is a number that is of some importance to American pot smokers. Go figure. I just like the tower as it supposedly once actually served as a mint and made coins once in its very long history. Hence the name.
