Are you up for a movie? Go to Kriterion! Are you up for drinks? Go to Kriterion! How about a coffee, lunch or just a place to study? Kriterion is the place for all these things:) The place is always lively — both during the day and night! Many students come here to study and enjoy a nice cup of Koffie Verkeerd (wrong coffee=café latte) ;) the prices are good, you get a cup of coffee for around 2 euro and a sandwich for 3,50 euro. During the weekends the bar is buzzing and the bar is serving a variety of different drinks! I really like this place and come here very often!:)

As a person who lives in a country where going to the movies is relatively cheap, this is a place that I like and dislike at the same time.
The reason why I like this place: great bar downstairs with amazing beers and they actually care about the films they show and not just projecting commercial cinema. They want people to see good films.
The one thing I dislike is the price/​quality equation. The projection rooms are small, screen is small and sound is not amazing. As a filmmaker and a lover of film I really need the best quality possible when watching a movie.
9 euros is not bad when it comes to Amsterdam Standards, but the quality of video/​sound is.
I would gladly return to this place though, since it has that real cinephile vibe flowing constantly and I’ve definitely had a great time every time I went.
You should still give it a chance.

best art cinema in Amsterdam. their matinée s are 8 euro, a steal by Amsterdam standards. the staircases are narrow, but they have an elevator if you’re scared. they have a really nice cafeteria as well where you can have pizza with a beer, or smaller stuff as well. a bit outside of the tourist area, but easily reached with tram 10 from leidseplein if you don’t bike.

I am going to give Kriterion 3 stars because they get kudos for their bar/​café. Plus I like the atmosphere. I am not too crazy about the cinema seats or screen, but it works if your objective is just to see a good film. Reminds me of an oldfashion movie theater but has some charm to it. You can check out almost any film here.

My favorite cinema in Amsterdam. Very cozy! Arthouse movies and some bigger movies (but they must be really cool). Student crowd. Also has a very cool café. Often hosts special theme nights.

It is a nice movie theater for art films and documentaries, a rarity today. Nowadays, commercial movies are also screen quite often.
It is the theater which gives a sort of old style feel but it is really not.
The bar or café on the ground floor is cool! Actually, I have been to this bar more times than to the films in Kriterion ;-)

Only one of the top two art house cinemas in Amsterdam. Student-​run, hosts a number of small film festivals and thematic events. Shows to occasional blockbuster (all in good or intentionally bad taste) and throws fun parties regularly. Vibrant place with a fashionable, but very laid back crowd.
