brown bars, i love you. if you’re in amsterdam– don’t be a hooligan and end up at some random trash bar– throw on the monocle and saddle up to one of the many brown bars scattered across the city. why? because the beer is delicious, the genever is tasty, the crowd is the right kind of weird, and the ambience feels like you’re being heavy petted by Dickens. go.

Amazing and historic place, locals and tourist alike come here. Great location, had decent red house wine(better than any other cafes I have tried).

Sehr freundliches Personal, gute Bierberatung. Nice and helpful stuff, old fashioned pub, 18th century atmophere, just nice to sit and to watch the time flies by.

I really wanted to go just because of the history– I love that sailors used to give them their monkey when they couldn’t pay. and that’s not a euphemism. The bartender was nice, but the bar itself is small and crowded. We were able to find a couple of stools precariously close to the stairs. We did, however, have some really delicious Irish coffees. Yum yum yum.

In my opinion the best little brown bar in all of Amsterdam, although I have not been to all of them, I can’t imagine many being better than this gem. It is definitely a must go to place. Quintessential. Great mix of locals and a few straggling visitors. Great ambiance, and just a great place to relax. The bartender is very friendly, and if you ask he will play you some tracks of him singing traditional Dutch music, which he does very well. The several times we were in here were very genuine and memorable experiences. I can’t wait to return.

A great little spot near the train station in a place that exudes tradition. The bar is operated by a single person, and seems like there are a bunch of these places out in the villages, but not necessarily in central Amsterdam. The small room has tons of bottles and décor and large windows which overlook the street. While there is a decent choice of beers, they also have 10 different genevers, including a 20 year old one that is perfect for sipping. Definitely a great place to hang out or for a quick stop.

Pretty darn cool! It’s a small brown bar and when I showed up at around 7pm I was the only woman in there, waiting for a friend. Everyone else were Dutchmen unwinding after work, really laid back and friendly. No frills and no stress. I could imagine sailors mingling here way back when. There are more genevers than I knew existed here and the bartender is really nice. Good beer selection and you can order finger foods, which will be brought over by a server from the pub around the corner.

Absolutely love this place. Spend about 45 minutes here between stops, had 2 Leffe Blondes, and couldn’t stop smiling. Extremely charming, timeless, and great people watching. In my book, a must-see when anywhere near the RLD.

Be prepared to cosy up with other drinkers in this very old pub. Its one room with open space and large ceiling windows. Located across from Central station and next to the Red Light district. Good for a short stop and then on your way.
