Somehow I’d neglected to write a review 5 ½ years ago — but since there’s someone else’s review from a year prior to our last stay, I’ve decided to add my review. We first stayed at the Brouwer for a few nights in November of 2004, in the Mondriaan room(on the top [third] floor). The owner couple were then living on-site and it seemed well-run, although he was verbally uncommunicative and she was rather perfunctory(far from a «welcoming» atmosphere). We stayed there again in May of 2010 — for six nights — and in the same room. The owner couple no longer lived on-site and they had a revolving crew of workers, none of whom seemed to communicate with anyone else working there(much less, with the owners). The American woman working there was rather *nasty*. When I made the reservation the last time, I was very explicit in making sure the elevator went to the top floor(I couldn’t remember after several years and the web site description was unclear), because I’d developed problems with one of my knees in the interim and the Brouwer is VERY tall & it has many steep/narrow stairs(as is certainly typical of old buildings in Amsterdam’s city center [and the reason why we wanted to stay on the top floor is because we didn’t feel like listening to creaking floors until late at night when people walked above us]). On THREE of our six days there, the elevator didn’t work when we attempted to go downstairs. To make matters worse, I was TRAPPED inside the elevator on two of those days(for *several minutes* each time) and it was quite frightening(the elevator is *minuscule*, which is certainly understandable — but«claustrophobic» is an understatement when you’re trapped inside it). Supposedly the elevator repair people were called each day and supposedly they repaired the elevator each day(certainly on the *third* day, but I really wonder about the other two days). On top of all that, the person who was working there on the first two days it happened had the GALL to tell me I shouldn’t expect a working elevator and that I should have stayed on a lower floor if it was going to be a problem(!!). When I finally managed to «escape» from the elevator each time, I then had to walk all the way downstairs with severe knee problems(I was also wearing a brace on the problem knee). The breakfast was pretty good, but that’s standard for the Netherlands — although the Brouwer’s wasn’t so incredible that I would rave about it. Lastly; with the exception of our arrival day(in 2010), it was quite obvious that no one cleaned our room(especially the bathroom) for *the entire duration* of our stay. The hotel was certainly clean overall, and admittedly the breakfast room was very cozy & charming. Also, the location is very convenient(within walking distance of Centraal Station). However, I’m being generous by giving three stars. (Note that the Brouwer is essentially like a B&B instead of a hotel).

That was such a great find for my 2 night stay in Amsterdam. My plan was to get to Centraal Station from the airport, take a walk on Damrak street to change the money to euros(the hotel only accepts cash) and then walk to Singel to check in to Hotel Brouwer. It was raining and I got a little lost at the end, but finally made it there. Nicely heated room with a view of the canal was the most amazing reward after a long trip and rainy weather! The room was tiny and full of charm. There was a little desk to put your laptop on, a twin bed and a small closet. The bathroom had a shower. Everything was sparkling clean. The wifi was free and had a pretty decent speed, but it wasn’t working on the first night when I was there. Their breakfast was a really nice touch: flaky croissant with jam, soft boiled egg, some bread, couple of slices of cheese and tea or coffee to drink. «Those poor people at the Hilton»(you will see that byword on their website). I must say that I agree and there was nothing better and more perfect for my stay in Amsterdam. I will gladly look into coming back here to explore this great city again.

We spent three nights in the Mondrian room last weekend in mid-February. We were on the top floor with wonderful views of the Singel canal. The room is very large and very clean. As always, all staff/personnel were very friendly and helpful. Breakfast was fine with breads, extra belegen sharp cheese, boiled egg, and coffee/tea. As I’ve said before, this is the only place we’ll stay in Amsterdam. We’ll be back next year!

This boutique hotel is exactly what I needed after long days visiting the museums and experiencing the local faire. My wife and I stayed in the Vermeer Room. It was simple yet modern like the artist himself. The furniture/bedding was in mint condition, I always appreciate a very clean room. This place has old world charm i.e. the stairs leading to the rooms is a narrow circular staircase. Lot’s of history. I appreciated the egg/toast/tea breakfasts. The hosts were extremely nice. This hotel is walking distance to many museums/bars/coffee houses/smart shops/red light districts… and to the metro.

This tiny hotel on the Singel canal has just 8 rooms but is an absolute jewel. All rooms have a canal view and private bathroom. Breakfast is served in a beautifully furnished room overlooking the Singel and it will set you up well for a days sightseeing. The hotel is ideally placed for many of the things you may want to see in the city such as the Anne Frank house, the Royal Palace and the flower market. It is also just a few minutes away from the peaceful Jordaan area of the city yet the nearest tram stop is just a few metres away and Centraal Station but a short walk. I’ve stayed at this hotel many times and I would always choose to stay here when visiting my favourite city!
