A nice nifty bakery around Westermarkt. Was in the area in the morning and found this breakfast spot as this is a pick-up point for Brouwer Tours(check em out!). They have typical breakfast fare(croissants, donuts, cold sandwiches, macaroons, waffles, etc.) and coffees/teas as well. Got a Belgian-like waffle and a cup of hot chocolate. Both are nice, typical food of the area and having already made trips to Europe before, I was aware of the light breakfast spots like these have to offer.

I’ve not had the chance to try their cupcakes, but everything else here is delicious. As I was staying at the Hotel Pultizer around the corner, I walked past here every day and tried something new daily. The Apple tart(a turnover in America) was to die for. So delicious, fresh, and definitely popular since they didn’t have it on days when I stopped in after 12pm. The cookies were also amazing. Tried a bunch of flavors, and every one was on point. The waffle, however, was the best thing I’ve eaten in Amsterdam all week. Had to go with the chocolate covered version, and it did not disappoint. The waffle was fresh, covered in powered sugar first and then amazing, rich chocolate that melted in your mouth/hands and the combination was just divine. I will definitely be back, just for this, but next time after a long jog.

I cycle by this place quite often but I only noticed it recently. Unfortunately, the cupcakes I tried were disappointing(vanilla & red velvet). Very dry, no taste and the frosting was hard, maybe they were from the day before. However, I also bought a raspberry croissant, lucky me. It’s like a chocolate croissant but filled with the same jam that’s used for berliners. Apart from that, the shop is quite average, not much more to say about it.

I miss frosting. Cake is ok, but generally it’s just a delivery method for frosting and what with all the apple tarts and cheesecake to be found in Amsterdam, a good dose of frosting is hard to come by. At Cup a la Cake, I was really hoping to get my frosting jones satisfied. Well. Cup a La Cake is part of de Osdorper but the front window is festooned with cupcakes so there should be no mistaking what you’re getting yourself into. They sell mini-cupcakes, which lends itself to lots of experimentation and regular sized cupcakes. I tried two mini’s — a vanilla with coconut frosting and a chocolate with choco frosting. The frosting was pretty good. The cupcakes were dense and, um, flavorless. The chocolate was definitely better then the vanilla and both tasted like they had been frozen… when frosting calls, though, you have to answer! Oh, and the sullen teenager who waited on me did not add to the experience.
