Fun fun and more fun at this first gay bar in Adam from 1927 and today still decorated as in the past. People are very friendly and ready to party.

I popped in with a female friend on Sunday after reading a lot about the history of the bar and Bet. The lady behind the bar told us she was closed even though there were plenty of other customers there and it was early in the evening. She was very hostile, aggressive and rude. It is my eleventh visit to Amsterdam and I have never experienced anything like this before. Very unwelcoming. Very disappointed after looking forward to visiting this historic bar :(

The oldest gaybar in town! Nice atmosphere, nice people. The bar started in 1927 by Bet van Beeren, a lesbian who thought al people where equal. If you’re wondering what al those ties are doing hanging on the ceiling, Bet cut them of from the man and put them there… When you’re in Amsterdam, visit this cozy bar.

This is definitely a gay bar and one for older men and their admirers. Friendly, funny staff and lively crowd. It can get very crowded.

This is place where the past meets the present. It’s a place with plenty of charm, personality, atmosphere and history. I was told that it’s not a gay bar per se but a bar that practices tolerance. You’ll meet all sorts of interesting people here. For me this would be a late night bar where I’d find a good drink and interesting conversation. It’s not for everyone but anyplace that is, for me would be boring. It’s also very near the red light district.

Historic gay café founded by Bet van Beeren over 80 years ago, making it one of Amsterdam’s first gay café’s. Not only was Bet openly gay, she was quite a character driving her motor cycle dressed in leather… and all that in 1927! After she passed away in 1967 the café was managed by her sister until the neighborhood fell victim to drug related problems. The café was never sold though and was kept exactly the way it was on the day it closed in 1982. Due to it’s historic value and the revival of the neighborhood it was reopened after 25 years in 2008. The legend of Bet alone makes it worth a visit, but they also know how to throw a party there! A must go!
