Normally, any kind of café or eatery in a museum tends to be somewhat of a gimmick full of mediocre food for ridiculous prices. But surprisingly, this isn’t the case at this little café. Nestled in the back bottom floor of NEMO, the science center in Amsterdam’s city center, Café Renzo Piano is a cute little place to grab a snack or a meal — whatever your belly desires. Those hoping to have a quick snack can choose from pastries, cookies, and the like. For people looking for more of a full meal the menu boasts different soups, salads, sandwiches, and hot dishes. We ordered a bowl of tomato soup, which comes with a piece of bread, as well as a side of fries. The food was made quickly, tasted good, and cost 6 euros in total. Not bad for something hot and quick and filling. Of course, it’s likely that these were premade foods, but the fact that the café wasn’t trying to pass them off as anything but was refreshing. And they didn’t even charge for the extra bread we requested! For those who are vegetarian, there are a few good choices. Vegans like myself were a little harder pressed to find something suitable, but luckily, all I wanted were fries, so I was in luck. The location itself is clean and modern, with lots of light coming in, and a pleasant view over the waterfront, looking out toward central station. The service is friendly and accommodating as well, and the atmosphere relaxed. You can pick up free Wifi from the museum too. Definitely stop by if you want a pre-museum snack or a cold beer to sip on post-museum.
