I have been visiting the Café De Zon with friends since 1990 and it is just an ideal location to chill out and watch the world go by. I have spent many happy days in this bar drinking Southern Comfort, talking with friends, snacking on a cheese toasty and leaving the stresses of home and London far behind me. Noting the comments in some of the other reviews regarding the staff and the general appearance of the place it is worth remembering that in many of the establishments in Amsterdam the facilities and the staff are abused by tourists high on drink and drugs. I have seen it first hand in the Café De Zon.
This is a traditional family run bar and I have always been afforded a warm welcome.

So we were just trying to find a pleasant ace to have a drink. We sat here and the waiter came to us. No menu available, very unfriendly. Didn’t accept card, and wouldn’t give us a receipt. There is really no reason why anyone would want to go there.

Honestly, within Amsterdam the location of this place is awesome, primarily for people watching and meeting with friends etc… It has an old rustic feel which can often be construed as filth, but it isn’t necessarily that bad. My take on this place is that the outdoor seating is awesome, the Amstel pours are delicious, the indoor seating is a bit cluttered and the service is just meh… I wouldn’t necessarily go out of my way to come to this bar, but if I’m walking by and would like a cold pint, may as well, especially if it’s a nice day/​night.

The people who own this bar are mean and bitter. There’s no soap in the bathroom because they are cheap. They don’t wash their glasses they just rinse them out, cheap. And they say mean things about the customers who speak English, in Dutch right in front of them. Avoid this bar at all costs, you won’t be sorry.

I came here for a coffee. I drank a very cold coffee, while V’s cappuccino was unconventionally hot. The seating was quite nice, especially because it was chilly outside. Plus, they have a cute cat inside.
Alas, the coffee makes me think about Zon in a negative light, not to mention the classic missing soap in the toilet. I feel dirty now.
It’s cheap and the service is good. Not much more to it.

What a great way to take in a light lunch and enjoy the weather. My fist time here, I had a traditional lunch that consisted of ;
A grilled cheese with ham, frites and a glass of beir. I came back many times after to enjoy the outside seating and the wonderful beirs.
I love this place, and you will too.
