Great un-crowded, easily toured in a few hours museum. Many information plaques, as well as the interactive multi-media are in both Dutch and English. Great artifacts and well done duration to place them in historical context. The multi-media part of the Egypt/Greek/Roman contemporaries was great in concept, but kind of missed the mark a little in effectiveness and a few of the displays were not working during both of our visits. The 2 pop-up and temporary exhibits we saw were stellar. One on modern art, and then later in August one on movement in Greek and Roman art. The one on movement was really fascinating, showing the early development of movement through geometric patterns, perspective, and form. If you are going to visit more than 2 museums in Amsterdam come here and buy a Museumkart(around 53 euros). You will be able to visit almost all of the major museums in The Netherlands for free for a year with no waiting in long lines. HIGHLY worth it to be able to drop in any time.

This is one of my favorite museums in Amsterdam, it is low-key and mega interesting. If you are an Egyptophile like myself, you will absolutely enjoy strolling the many levels of this museum. The mainfocus of the Allard Pierson is archaelogy, with a strong focus on Egyptian, Roman and ancient Greek artifacts. You will see a little bit of everything from these time periods, but the most interesting and elaborate section of the museum is the one that focuses on ancient Egypt. It tends to get very warm in here, so much so that I once fainted twice in a row. The freaky part was that I passed out in this small enclosure next to a mummy. Was it the heat or an ancient curse? Don’t forget to have the computer generate your name in hieroglyps; it is a fun keepsake for young and old alike. If you are looking for a couple of hours of solitude while visiting Amsterdam and wish to avoid the super touristy areas, come on down to the Allard Pierson and hang with the mummies and the rest of us.
