I just had a wonderful dinner at this special place on Amersfoort station. A place to slow down while others around you hurry to get from one train to another to be home on time. That is just one thing that makes this place special, the location, but the food is, like at Tollius, their partner restaurant in Amersfoort, really of good quality. I started with a nice ‘aperitivo Hugo’ of Prosecco with elderflower blossom, mint and lime. It took a while before our order was taken, that could have gone more quickly, but as soon as the waiter saw our impatience he was right at the table. We ordered the mixed starters. A nice way to try all the different starters they offer. From carpaccio till pumpkin soup, all very good taste combinations. After the aperitivo Hugo I continued with a very special white wine that happened to combine really good with the ‘Risotto monte e mare’ with cep and gamba’s. The name of the wine was Nativ made from the Falanghina grapes and the waiters favorite. I understand why. After all these wonderful courses came the secondi piatti. Unfortunately I was already quite fulfilled. It was a grilled swordfish with fennel. In my opinion the fennel, especially the fennel seeds were a bit overdone, but it could also be the fact that I enjoyed too many great courses before this one. So I just had half of it and decided not to have a dessert. But that is impossible at Tollius or Perron 4/5, because their desserts are sublime. So I decided to wait a while and enjoy the red wine the waiter advised to accompany the swordfish. He said it was an experiment and I had to tell for myself if I liked the combination. I did and I really like waiters who have the guts to propose these things and not always serve the usual suspects. And then I had space for some lemon tart by Jos. We understood Jos is a patissier from Laren who creates these wonderful desserts. I think I will have to find this guy! The raspberry sauce was an ethereal finishing touch for the lemon tart. The scoop of yoghurt icecream was nice but not needed. I was so happy that I waited to create some space for desert. And then… Time for grappa! The waiter presented us a selection of seven grappa’s. We chose a nice soft one made of Gewürztraminer grapes, because again, it was the favorite of our waiter and I tend to trust these guys. Lucky me, cause it was a good one. All in all I would really recommend this place. You can get here from anywhere in the Netherlands as Amersfoort is located quite central, and you don’t have to worry about driving a car. It is literally inside the train station.
