Massive crew of us went there for«Monday mussel madness» as we call it. Started with a booking for 6, then 12, then 18. The staff were cool to accommodate until the last minute even with the changes. We showed up, all was ready and waiting upstairs. Service was great(thanks sarah!) and the beers were on form. We had mussels of all flavours and thoroughly enjoyed them. Hands down the winning flavour is the Thai coconut one. Everyone raved about them. Thy dealt with our noise, our booziness, and 16 people all trying to figure out what to do with the bill afterwards. Awesome service with a continuous smile. Overall food here is decent, in our opinion, but not excellent. Would definitely recommend the specials each day, but would likely not roll in outside of those.

A Mt Eden staple, De Post is pretty much what you would expect from a Belgian pub on the high street with the usual range of light and dark Belgian beers. Tuesday night is quiz night, which overall is not as much fun as at the Horse and Trap up the road. The food is standard pub grub with nothing to write home about. The service is friendly and efficient. If you’re feeling fancy, you could try the $ 106 bottle of beer that’s brewed in limited editions by Belgian monks drunk on principle and not on profit. Go wild. God bless.

Service: 2⁄5 Food: 3⁄5 Environment: 2⁄5 Overall, not that good. I don’t think we will go back. We booked a table for 12 people. When we arrived, a table of 4 was reserved. How can you confuse with 4 and 12?! When we asked one staff member, she wasn’t that friendly, didn’t say sorry at all. I think she needs to take ownership of the problem even she wasn’t the one that make the reservation. She said I have no idea, I don’t know. We only have a table for 4. I need to talk to my manger. She was quite grumpy the whole time. Finally, 12 of us were standing for about half an hour. A nice staff combined 2 tables for us. She was looking after us for the night. If it is not her. I will give the service a –1. Depend on what you are looking for. This place is not good for birthday party. The food was ok. Finally we have a cake. The same bad staff brought the cake to us with the entire packaging as well. That is first. We were surprised. They normally will bring the cake with the candle already on top of the cake. Not even mention still inside the box. They didn’t charge us for the cake service fee. Maybe that’s why. Also, the place is very tight. No space to move around.

I really had a hard time deciding between 2 and 3 stars for this. I was really impressed with the beer selection when my partner and I first arrived. I was not, however, impressed when we were told that my partner’s first couple selections were not available. When we ordered our second round we had the same problem. The food was not great, especially for the price. We had calamari, mac and cheese, and fish and chips. Everything was just really bland. The mac and cheese was supposed to have blue cheese in it, but it just tasted like plain ol’ mac and cheese you could make out of the box(except not electric orange, thankfully). The food took forever to arrive. The servers(we had at least three — I could never figure out who was just delivering food and who I was supposed to order from) were nice and apologetic about not having so many of the beers on their menu, but didn’t seem particularly interested in coming to take orders and checking if we wanted more drinks. The reason I am giving it 3 stars instead of 2 is that I feel like if we had gone and just ordered the mussels and chips like everybody else seated around us, we would have been much more happy with the experience. I do plan to go back to try out some more beers and try the mussels — everybody looked like they were really enjoying them. I may revise my review after my next visit.

The reviews so far for De Post have been relatively underwhelming, but I want to let you guys know that you can go there for a really excellent experience too! I’ve shared special occasions with friends a handful of times at De Post and they’ve been really great every time. I went to De Post for my birthday a couple of years ago. The staff organised for us to have a big outside table, and went out of their way to ensure we had the right table configuration, that we weren’t too cold(it was June) and that the large(and kind of annoying) amount of dietary requirements were catered for. The staff were charming, attentive and really really helpful, I can’t fault them. My experiences at De Post are in complete contrast to my most recent experience at sister bar De Fontein, leading me to believe that it doesn’t matter if you’re cut from the same cloth, it’s the service that makes the difference. As for the food, it was served quickly and piping hot. Sure, it wasn’t amazing(particularly if you’re not a big meat eater), but those of us who had buckets of mussels were moaning and groaning and loving it from start to end.

Oh geez, two stars. I really, really want to love De Post, but the last couple of times I’ve been, the food has kind of sucked. It’s hit and miss, but the fries are always good, so put your bet on them. Perhaps if I were a big beer drinker or if I could get past the fact that mussels look like they have zips and enjoy them I would like the Belgium café a lot more, but I’m not and I can’t so two stars it is. On a positive note, it’s warm and cosy inside in Winter and when they get it right, the food can be really good and it can actually be a nice place to hang out. Also, full disclosure: my ex boyfriend from when I was 16 who got his friend to help him break up with me worked at De Post for a while so those ill feelings I have towards him, I am also taking out on the establishment he used to frequent.

De Post is another of the Belgian Beer Café lot but I think it’s a little less memorable than many of the others I’ve been in. It seems to lack a little personality. In saying that it certainly hasn’t affected its popularity, it is packed on an average Friday night! It’s a nice place to go with friends as long as you can find a seat and they do a pretty decent kilogram of mussels. While it’s not overly adventurous in its menu, they serve good pub food and the meal sizes are always ample.

De Post is fine I guess but I don’t recommend you eat here. It’s not that the food is terrible(although it can be), it’s just that you can do better for the same kind of money elsewhere without having to repark the car. The platters are more than adequate if you’re in a group and need soakage, and hard to get wrong. I have to say too that the Dessert menu looks delicious so maybe popping in for something sweet with one of their special coffees is a good way to go. They do Waffles too… As De Post is part of the stable of Belgian Beer Cafes, a lot of people come for the Mussels which I can’t comment on, but it’s likely that this place just doesn’t do vegetarian very well. Or fish. The beer however is totally worth coming here for, especially if you like the light European styles. I find I’m a bit partial to the Belle-Vue Kriek Cherry Beer. It’s pink and yummy. The building is of course beautiful so pop in to check it out and if the sun’s still shining, there’s footpath tables or a big outdoor area upstairs.

To me, this Belgian Beer Café is more of a traditional pub than the others in the chain. The menu and drinks served are essentially the same, but it’s something about the layout or the location that makes it feel more pubbish. I think I once walked in and straight back out again, thinking I’d stumbled into the local RSA by mistake. That was a few years ago though, and with the change in Mt Eden, The Cloak Room etc nearby the area is attracting a younger, less sports-watching-oriented crowd. It is probably still a good place to watch sports too, I didn’t see any TVs but I’d bet money there are some and they show the All Blacks games.

My parents were visiting so we went to De Post for a meal out. It just so happened to be a Monday, and this means Mussel Monday at De Post(read half price mussels). This suited my dad and we all got to sample some from his bucket! I don’t call myself a fan of mussels, but they were in a sauce that Manu from My Kitchen Rules would have approved of. Us ladies enjoyed the flemish beef stew, which had great flavour and was just the right size. Delicious served with potato mash. De Post has a very extensive beer list. I have always found the staff to be friendly and attentive. A variety of seating is available — ground level, upstairs or outside on the deck. I think De Post offer a dining experience that is great value for your money.

De Post is a Belgium Beer café in Mt Eden Village that has gained a reputation over the years for having the best steamed mussels around. I don’t even eat seafood and I’ve tried them. Located in the old Mt Eden post office(hence the name), De Post is an iconic building with outdoor seating both on the street and upstairs. Umbrellas provide much needed shade as the seating on the street catches the afternoon sun. I know from personal experience how easy it is to get sunburned while sitting there enjoying a cold one, so make sure you bring sunblock! With a great selection of beers on tap, screens to watch the latest rugby game and a competitive quiz night mid week, De Post offers more than just a drink.
