The only Malay authentic foods so far I had in NZ, seem like back Mamak store, Abang Teh Tarik satu.

Uncle’s Mans I think is good cheap honest home Malaysian. There’s no frills, just a tiny shop hidden on K Road. They do a great job on their extensive range of both savoury and sweet roti. A shame they ran out of banana but proceeded to give my friend a banana Roti for him to find it was lucky to have ½ of a small banana in it. So therefore a bit dry and could have come with a drizzle or some condensed milk that another kind came with. The servings are generous as was the Chicken Laksa I ordered. So much noodles in it that I couldn’t finish. But it seemed to me it was made for the majority of Kiwi’s and didn’t have enough kick. As I worked my way thru the bowl, which didn’t have too much chicken I was hoping for a wow factor that alas I didn’t get. I think if you are looking for a good cheap meal give it a go.

Every now and then, it’s nice to benefit from others’ reviews on Unilocal, rather than just adding ones own point of view. It was one of those moments, thanks to Druinie P, that led me to Uncle Man on K Road. Uncle Man is a shy guy who likes to lurk in the shadows and I confess I had never previously noticed him while distracted by the showier characters on the same street. In his clean and simple establishment, seemingly run by family and friends, he offers some of the best and most authentic Malaysian fare I have tasted in Auckland. The Beef Rendang, served with rice, roasted peanuts and even fried sprats(you hardly ever see those here) takes you straight to the kitchens of KL. The chicken biriyani is a superb Malaysian take on an Indian classic. There are even Murtabaks(savoury filled pancakes that are the street food of Asia), Dadar Gulung(pandan pancakes filled with palm sugar-soaked coconut) and iced or warm Milo. Now, no Malaysian can get more real than that! I guess it’s true, Uncle Man is my(and Druinie’s) new best friend.

I don’t know if I want to tell you all about this place! Affordable, no frills, authentic, family run Malaysian restaurant in Auckland’s scenic K Rd. Pays to go with people who already know the menu inside out like I did. I ordered a very pink but enjoyable rose flavoured milk drink and ordered their ultra spicy beef rendang which came with two moorish flaky rotis. The deep fried banana dessert is for sharing, don’t make the mistake of ordering it just for yourself. Enough said, excellent choice for cheap, tasty eating in Akld.

Uncle Man most definitely deserves to be on my «American-sized» portion list. My plate of Kuey Teow Goreng aka Fried Flat Rice Noodle(vegetarian option) was plentiful and had a very nice kick to it(hint: this aint no ‘kiwi-medium spicy’; if you like heat without tears, medium is a solid choice). For $ 11.50, it was quite the bargain. They had some really interesting drinks including Sirap Bandung, or ‘Iced milky rose drink’. which apparently is pretty good but also FLUORESCENT pink(Pepto-Bismol style) which kind of freaks me out. Despite lacking a drizzling of chocolate [as pictured on the menu], the banana fritter(aka fried banana a la mode) was scrumptious. The service & ambiance definitely leave a bit to be desired but the food(at least the Malayasian offerings — they also have steak, chicken schnitzel and fish n chips on the menu?) tasted very authentic and the price is right, soo I’ll certainly be back. Also to the Roti man: I want your skills.

OMG ! This place is delicious! Tucked away in a non– descript corner on K’rd is this small café style eatery, Uncle Mans . At the counter you can see their star Roti canai maker expertly crafting the moist chewy roti made freshly for you to dip your Dahl or Beef Rendang in . I ordered the keauy goreng and a plain roti, also a virgin colada . The goreng had flat rice noodles and was pleasantly spicy, it also had that charred taste that a good goreng should have . The Virgin colada came at just the right time as the spice in the noodles was getting up there . I’m begging you to order the fried bananas! These are little fried gems of nirvana, battered and deep fried bananas with a huge dollop of vanilla ice cream, do not pass go until you’ve had these . Look for this place and if you don’t, well you’ll just be hungry.

There’s not many places in Auckland where you can find Roti Cani, but Uncle Man does fresh roti canai. Would definitely recommend this place for Malaysian food!

I have so many mixed feelings on this one… Ok, first the Awesome: Fried Bananas — I cannot express how much you need, no, MUST order these. Even if you only order these(and maybe a fabulous drink) you are getting the best on offer! Next up, the drinks — a large and interesting selection of non-alcoholic drinks are on offer from milkshakes, spiders, traditional Malaysian drinks and even Virgin Pina Coladas(which my partner in crime had, the sip I had made me determined to order it next time. The menu covers from Malaysian to European, and I think this is where we went wrong… the salt and pepper squid was average, as were the curly fries. The honey soy chicken dish I had managed to be bland, bland, bland and I finished less than a third of it, yet no query was made by the wait staff & I was distracted by the AMAZING fried bananas that had arrived so didn’t think to give my feedback… yep, my bad. Cheap and cheerful, but I would order from the Malaysian side of the menu next time or just come for dessert and a sweet drink which were the winners on the night. Service was average, I did see they have a A food rating however décor is um, minimal? The acoustics of the premise make for noisy dining even when only a few tables are occupied. The TL: DR? Go for the Fried Bananas and interesting drinks, other menu items are hit and miss.

K-road isn’t really my scene, so when my sister told me about this unpretentious little Malaysian restaurant, I was a little skeptical. After driving around endlessly, looking for a car park, I was really beginning to wonder if my sister had lost the plot completely! Nope, my sister was right on the money — this place is as good as it gets! The food is insanely good and I cannot fathom why this place doesn’t have more reviews??? My sister and I have fond memories of eating the best beef rendang and prawn sambal in Singapore. Nothing we tried, until now, came close to what we had experienced in our Aunty V’s kitchen. Uncle Man’s is the place to go if you’re interested in sampling the authentic oasis of flavours, typical of Malaysian cuisine. Their beef rendang which consists of chunks of beef gently simmered down to a richly fragrant dry curry, is a dish fit for the gods! We tried about ten dishes and they were all amazing! The service was great too. This is a family run eating establishment that sure knows how to dish up authentic cuisine at crazy affordable prices!

Fantastic, open for 7 months now. Nicer atmosphere than many of the little places along this street, very clean, friendly and efficient service. Server took time to explain the menu thoroughly. Mee goring, check. Iced coffee, check. Can’t wait to try more dishes!
