A perfectly adequate café on the fringe of Ponsonby Central, ThirtyNine café has great potential. The bones of the place show promise but are lacking design savvy and could do with some TLC. The staff are lovely and the food is quite tasty, albeit a little on the pricey side. I think the outside courtyard is pretty special, as this is an area that could be spectacular if only the new owners knew how to utilise it. With such good hearty food, lovely staff and nice location ThirtyNine Café shows promise. I’ll definitely keep popping in to see how things progress under the new ownership.

Always been a fav café for the eggs Benedict. The food is nice and the coffee not to bad. A nice little café for a relaxing meal and reasonably priced too. Staff are very very friendly too which makes it warm and inviting to visit.

Under new management. It’s always a worry when one of your faves changes hands and messes with the menu and the place overall. So far that hasn’t happened in fact some slight menu tweaks are for the better. The new owners are friendly and focused on a nice experience. Café 39 will remain on our list of regular brunch stops.

Thirty Nine Café is an average café with barely adequate food and the only thing it really has is a small courtyard away from the main road. It’s miscellany of potted plants tries, but fails, to create an alluring oasis after walking through the cafés kitchen to access it. The drinks lists are not up to date, even though all the menus are scrawled in chalk. The specials of the day are noted on a roadside blackboard but not inside. The food is cheap and low quality. For example a $ 14 meal entitled«German Potato Salad with Frankfurters» was half a potato in mustard sauce and American hotdogs. For a café in Ponsonby, surrounded by others which such a high standard, it really needs to lift it’s quality and professionalism.

I used to come here weekly(if not more) for their 39-er sandwich — basically a BLAT served with half of an avocado, honey cured bacon and delicious pesto, all on a toasted bun. It was nothing if not delicious and also very affordable. It got to the point where I would walk in and they would smile and say ‘One 39-er?’ Yes, I was that regular. Then the café changed hands and the prices went up, and the serving of avocado on the 39-er was reduced, then the bun changed to a not-so-nice bread instead, and a whole host of other changes. Basically, it just never was the same again. They have a nice courtyard out the back where you can sit on a sunny day, the location on Ponsonby Road is excellent, but the food is not as good as it has been in the past.
