With the number of South African friends I have I can’t believe it took me so long to discover this wonderful shop — ah well, better late than never. I’ve long been appreciated South African meats, especially boerewors sausage, so it’s nice to have somewhere to get everything I need to do it properly. I was also led by a friend on my first visit to these wonderful things called ‘Flings’ — they’re puffed up corn chips kinda like Poppa Jacks and I now eat them religiously. This is one of few places I can find them, so it’s worth the four stars it gets here for that reason alone!

I will be granted citizenship this year, and I’m very excited to get my Kiwi passport. This is my home, and I don’t regret my move to the land of the Land of the long white cloud, especially after the last summer. I do miss my family and friends, and various things we used to do or places we frequented. But I don’t miss being a South African or living with the issues South Africa presented us on a daily basis. Here in New Zealand, I feel at home, and relaxed. I don’t even miss South African food or products, with the slight exception of about five key products; I still need my biltong, Pro Nutro, guava juice, pap and boerewors. Everything else can be replaced by Kiwi products. At the SA shop they’ve got almost everything a homesick Saffer will need, including the new number one on my Christmas wish list: a biltong maker.

For me, this place brings a heck of a lot of nostalgia. Because I moved to New Zealand at the tender age of 8, most of my South African memories involve beaches, swimming, good times and SWEETS! Jelly tots, peppermint crisps, bar one, PS bars, milk tarts and of course Biltong! These are those sweet little treats that take me back to my childhood. And this South African Shop has all of them! The selection is pretty impressive and I can’t think of something I would have wanted to see in there that was missing. Also, the prices aren’t too bad. Usually I expect to be cranking the wallet wider than usual when in a shop like this but I was pleasantly surprised. Not everything in here is edible. There’s some other funky South African nik naks(not the chippies) that are worth having a look at!
