We went for the«all day» $ 17.90 Mains special at 18:30 only to be told they don’t do mains. So we got a steak starter and fries. Ended up getting a cold steak.

Hangar is one of those bars that are definitely good and definitely bad, depending what you’re into and what you’re looking for. We used to regularly attend the Tuesday night Pub Quiz and have the best time, Ewan Gilmore was the MC and he was a great laugh. We’d have a group of friends and we did alright, but never came close to winning the prize of a sweet bar tab. The restaurant is alright, quite similar in style to Black Salt in New Lynn, and similar in pricing. Other than that, I usually wouldn’t come to Hangar, especially on a Friday or Saturday night, when it turns into West Auckland’s version of Downtown Auckland; cue hip hop music, girls in short skirts and tight dresses, guys in polo shirts and skate shoes. If that’s what you’re after, however, then go for it! But the pub quiz is definitely a great time so go along and join in.

The words«meat market» spring to mind when I think about my experiences at the Hangar. I first went for a friend’s twentieth birthday party, and even at that age I knew this wasn’t my type of place. If a band playing a cover of «I’ve got a feeling» by the Black Eyed Peas — non ironically — is your type of thing, then this probably is your type of place. They have a gimmicky set up where the beer runs through«ice chilled taps,» producing what they claim is «THECOLDESTBEERYOUWILLEVERHAVE.» Unfortunately, every time I tried one of these beers, they used glasses that were not long out of the dishwasher, making it more of a «drink this beer quickly before it gets lukewarm.» I guess there isn’t much around West Auckland in the way of nightlife, so the Hangar could serve as a good meeting place if you can’t be bothered making the mission to town.

The first time I went to The Hangar is known as one of the best nights of my life. After living in West Auckland for most of my life I had never found the idea of clubbing in my hood as appealing or exciting. I had the worst expectations about neighborhood bars but oh boy The Hangar changed my perception. I went there with a couple of my friends on a Friday night to enjoy my friend’s last night in New Zealand. When I got there I was surprised that there was a line and wondered what the fuss was all about, but then I heard the music and that is when my night officially began. By the time I got to the front of the line I could not wait to get inside and shake my tail feather! The music was just right and DJ Manchoo was spinning the right tracks. What I love the most about The Hangar is the crowd, the music and the drink specials. Everyone there is out to have a good night, whether they are wearing their heels or rocking their jandals. The outside where they are seats for those that want to still hear the music but have a chat and smoke, the inside is where the dancer floor and bar are located and at the entrance a few tables for those that want to hear the music but also want to sit and chill. The Hangar is a perfect spot for those that cannot be stuffed looking for parking in the city, plus the different events throughout the week make it a place for everyone to enjoy themselves
