Possibly the ultimate Friday after work drinks bar in town, it just oozes fun while you’re chilling out with friends and colleagues, and it is located on the pinnacle of prime positions. I usually meet my mates here for pre drinks, drinks, if you know what I mean. Sure it is a bit pretentious, but that’s what I like about it, and that’s why we start our night here. The sign on the door dictates that there are no mullets allowed… Doesn’t that just set the tone for an upmarket night where people can talk and share experiences. My favourite part about Takapuna Bar is the excellent vantage point it provides the drinker to check out the local talent. And trust me, on a late Friday afternoon, the streets of Takapuna becomes filled with talent.

Good ol’ Takapuna Bar on the corner there, one of the original bars on the Taka ‘strip’ and still ticking along nicely. Back before Hurstmere Road became more trendy, and the other bar options were, let’s say, a little more bogan, Takapuna Bar was a nice place to perch on a summer’s evening in the sun and enjoy a beverage or two with a friend. I haven’t been late at night but I presume the vibe stays pretty chilled and low key, with no young, pretentious twats milling around. Sitting on the corner you can see everything going on — the cars coming and going around the roadabout and people walking up and down the road, it’s a great spot for people watching.

Takapuna bar was the cool spot to go in Taka before it was really cool to go out in Taka. If you’ve ever been anywhere around this area you’ll have seen the place, but probably not known exactly what it was, as you can see the outdoor area next to the roundabout on Hurstmere road, and in the evenings there’s usually a few people sitting outside enjoying this little spot. The interior is separated into three smaller areas, my favourite being the middle spot with the nice big leather couches and the indoor fireplace, which they fire up in winter making for a great place to gather and shelter from the cold outside. Although it seems to have been shunned a little in favour for the bigger, flashier places down the road, Taka Bar is still a great place to chill and enjoy a drink and escape the crowds.

I often think Takapuna Bar must get a bit neglected as there are so many other options now days, which seem to buzz at every waking minute. But I think this bar does well in it’s own way. It is definitely for a more mature crowd, who are perhaps more into having a quiet drink and a lengthy catch up. This is the kind of place you can do that without having to compete with loud music or nattering teenagers. When you’re perched outside Takapuna Bar you can feel very powerful. Right on the corner, the seats give you a pretty fulfilling view of what’s going on in Taka. This can be helpful if you’re starting out your night here and want to keep an eye on what’s happening down the road. I’ve had some great sessions sitting outside here with a heater blasting my back and a big glass of wine in my hand. It was exactly what I wanted at that time!

The competition in the Takapuna pub scene has definitely increased in the past few years. While more recent entrants like Macs Brew Bar and the Commons might be more popular with the kids, Takapuna Bar is still a classic and the ideal place to watch the world go by under the shady tree canopy. Located on the corner of Hurtsmere Road and Anzac Ave, the pub is perfectly located. It must be said that the beer selection is not quite as extensive of some of the other bars around, but there’s certainly enough selection for all but the fussiest of patrons to enjoy. Probably the best thing about Takapuna Bar is that it attracts a slightly older crowd. So if you want to avoid the 18 years olds give it a try.
