Don’t let my wife know I gave them a 3 star review. She was thinking lower. LOL. This is first place we ate in Auckland. We were actually looking for a Korean restaurant. Well… As dumb luck would have it… This is a Korean run Japanese sushi joint. Carousel style with a menu. We both ordered udon sets. I liked the chicken katsu I had with mine. Also liked the salmon sashimi from hers. The udon soup was meh. Nothing real sexy on the carousel but all of it pricy. We’re visitors so probably won’t be back. If you’re looking for sushi this place is ok but I’d recommend extending your search past here. We work hard for our money, right? :-)

The Sushi Factory is on the paved walking street of Vulcan lane. A cute sushi restaurant where dishes come out on a conveyor belt. Not as authentic as I had hoped(Korean owned). Didn’t help that they ran out of one of my favourite dishes(squid) and didn’t serve my other(salmon roe). The dishes average around $ 4 – 5 and so the bill accumulates quite fast as each dish a quite a small serving. Great selection of japanese sake. Overall a fun experience.

I love sushi trains, and I have no idea why we don’t have more of them — a couple have popped up in town but not in the numbers they have in other places I’ve been. Maybe it disagrees with our Kiwi sensibility and needing personal space or something stupid like that. Maybe business people don’t like getting their ties stuck in the conveyer. Anyway, I digress, the Sushi Factory is a good authentic sushi train experience, set in the lovely Vulcan Lane in a dark wee room behind a bamboo curtain. Everything is close together so like I say, don’t go in expecting personal space or anything, and it’s awfully easy to blow the budget when stuff keeps coming around at you — but that’s just the nature of a sushi train — it draws you in and then you just keep picking up more stuff!

As much as I like Japanese, I’m a picky eater, and things like raw fish, smoked eel, octopus balls etc just don’t do it for me. I’ll have the fried chicken any day. I recently discovered the Sushi Factory although I’m sure I’ve walked past it dozens of times. It’s hidden behind a bamboo curtain so unless you’re curious enough to poke your head through, you’d never realsie it was a sushi conveyor belt restaurant. Luckily enough I was curious and found sushi train was an excellent lunch-time spot for mid-week, mid-city, a bit out of the hustle and bustle. It was a little pricey but I didn’t have much, and nothing exotic, so it came to only about $ 10 or $ 12. Well worth a return visit.

Delicious sushi swirling around on a conveyor belt just like you see in various films. You pay a certain amount for each dish that you choose, or you can optionally find something fresh off the menu. I’ve had a teriyaki chicken dish, which was totally scrummy, and also eaten a few times from the train. I’ve never been disappointed, but it’s super easy to go over budget when you keep smelling new dishes going past! However, I tend to stay around $ 12 max, which is average for most meals in the city. Located on the classy Vulcan Lane, Sushi Factory is a great place to pop into for a snack or a full meal while out on the town.

Sushi Factory is one of those places where you end up eating just a little bit more than you should have. It’s on the pricey side(about $ 4-$ 7 per plate) but the service is friendly and the delicious array of sushi, which comes around conveyor-belt style, is the best I’ve tasted in Auckland. The only drawback is that the stools are lined up so close it’s a bit like being on a rush-hour train. But hey, think of it as an authentic Japanese experience, as well as the perfect place to snuggle up for a cosy lunch date.
