I am an absolute fiend when it comes to Japanese food but I’m also incredibly fussy too! Hygiene and good quality produce together with senso style ability to construct the perfect California Roll are paramount. Of all the sushi joints in the Central City St Pierre’s is my go-to lunch spot. With a store both downtown and uptown between Lorne and Queen Streets my sushi addiction can be easily managed. The place is always spotless and the food is superb. My faves are salmon nigiri, tuna rolls and teriyaki chicken with rice. Each day there is a sushi«special» eg on a Monday it’s 8 pieces of teriyaki sushi roll for $ 5.40 and each day the special changes — great value at a $ 3 discount off the regular price! I think St Pierre’s managed to dominate the sushi market in New Zealand because they did that fastfood thing of standardizing everything. So each branch has the same variety of sushi, miso soup, and set lunches(more or less) and it all tastes the same no matter where you buy it. It’s not amazing sushi, but it’s not awful either. It’s definitely modified for kiwi tastebuds — the rice is sweet and the fillings are non-traditional. Case in point: a friend went to Japan and told people her favourite sushi flavour was chicken, and they gasped in horror. Because in Japan, sushi meat is always raw! This branch stands out for its friendly staff and their willingness to make to order, not just things that have sold out, but special requests too. I sometimes ask them to make me plain onigiri(with no filling) and they are always more than obliging.
