Went to Robs last week sadly to find it had been sold and a new shop was in its place.

One of my fave lunch and pie stops on the Ponsonby road. I used to live close by in Grey Lynn and pop in on quite the occasion to grab a delicious vegetarian or fish pie. Always was just perfect on the way home from work — it really did the trick with filling the gap. The lovely couple who own and operate Rob’s are just so genuine and remembered me from months back after I moved out of the neighbourhood. I returned to grab a few sandwiches and sweet slices and of course they were questioning where I had been and how I was. It is so nice to find that friendly hospitality especially in such a neighbourhood as Ponsonby. They do have some yummy freshly baked bread, and use this for all their sandwiches. If you have a special birthday or occasion they do some delicious decadent cakes to order.

Was bouncing around Ponsonby the other day when a sign caught my eye — ‘Supreme Pie Winner’. Now I’ve been trying to lay off the pies recently(alarmingly expanding puku), but I was peckish, it was just about lunchtime, so I went«shit when in Rome»… I just can’t resist a good pie no matter how hard I try. This is one pie stop I sure didn’t regret! There were all sorts of interesting posh flavours, but a good mince and cheese is the standard measure of a pie maker’s skill for me, and this was one of the best I’ve had — proper filling, crisp pastry, stayed together — close to perfect. As a bonus, the lady working that day was an absolute hoot to chat to — what a lovely person!

Rob’s Patisserie surprised me. –Oh you’re yet another«patisserie» are you? A Ponsonby panini distributor more like it. You’re just a Robert Harris with hiked up prices aren’t you? Is your last name Harris, Rob? Is it?! That was me. Well, what ever you last name is Rob, good on you. I am a critical and extremely particular bastard, but you win. Rob’s is patisserie with a great range of pastry products, from slices to cakes, from bread loaves to pies. And award winning pies at that. Pork belly and coriander or lamb and mint? No, not your local petrol station, reheated eats. A shop that deserves to be called a patisserie, instead a place using French words for the assumption of quality. I’m sorry I judged you Rob.
