Ponsonby Pool Hall

I’m secretly amazed people still go here — as adults, I mean. When I was a teenager this was where teenagers went to spend their evenings trying to impress girls and surreptitiously drinking beers they’d sneaked into the toilets. Oh and playing pool, sometimes. But it seems that grown-​ups enjoy this place too, and not just in an ironic faux-​slumming way. Turns out people actually like pool, I guess. Which works out well, because that’s what the Ponsonby Pool Hall is all about. Plus, now that you’re of age, you can enjoy a drink with your game. In the open, I mean — one that you bought there rather than smuggled in zipped up in your oversized backpack. What weirds me out most is that the place isn’t even full of obnoxious, drunkenly underage teenagers. Where did they all go? They must be secretly drinking somewhere, but wherever it is I’m glad it’s not here…

The Ponsonby Pool Hall is one of my favourite places in Auckland to play pool. Unlike most bars that revolve around pool and other such games, this Pool Hall isn’t remotely seedy and you don’t feel like you have to be a pool-​genius to enjoy a few games with friends.
With lots of tables available for hire, and both big-​ball and small-​ball tables on hand, the Ponsonby Pool Hall caters to everyone from beginners to expert pool players.
The Ponsonby Pool Hall also boasts a full bar, with beers, wines and spirits readily available. So boys grab a pint and enjoy a game, while girls you can indulge in a vodka lime or nice wine!
Open during the day and well into the night, Ponsonby Pool Hall is a fun place to spend a few hours, and located conveniently under the Ponsonby Foodcourt, great meals are right at your finger tips!
Tip: One of the staff members is this cool local guy that’s worked there for six years and is absolutely amazing at pool. It’s pretty great watching him play — keep an eye out next time you’re there.

The Pool Hall offers two sized tables from full sized blue felt billiards, to smaller green felt pool tables (I hope I’ve got my pool tables right).
The pay when you’re done philosophy works well, and the food court upstairs offers an ideal pre-​match meal.
Ring to book as this is a popular spot during the evenings. The tv’s dotted around the joint offer an additional element, particularly with the rugby and league seasons coming up.

Located right next to the iconic Ponsonby Food Hall the pool hall is a great palce to while away some hours chatting, playing, have a few drinks, and basically enjoy grinding your friends into the dust with your superior skills!
Slightly more expensive than pay by the game tables, you hire the tables by the hour, but with a few people it works out to like a dollar a game, so it’s not an issue.
