We came here for the 5 course tasting menu. First time here and loved the setting of the restaurant! Though a little hard to take good photos of the food lol As we are trying to figure out which Gin to order, as there are so many choices here, the waitress came and help us out and even offer us to have a sip of all the ones we are interested in… All the food is very well presented and mostly tastes good, quite happy with the dinner and overall services.

My husband and I truly enjoyed our dinner at Matterhorn. We were visiting Auckland and staying nearby but wanted a true local dining experience. We were able to dine here without a reservation on a Saturday evening after waiting about 45 minutes in the bar area, and were seated around 9:30pm. The wait wasn’t a big deal because you can get cocktails and apps in the separate bar area. We elected to try the venison appetizer while we waited and it was hands down the best venison I’ve ever tasted. We likened it to BBQ burnt ends. Once seated for dinner we ordered the lamb and the beef cheek and we couldn’t decide which was better but suffice it to say they were both magnificent. We did order 2 sides — green beans and a salad and they seemed like afterthoughts from the kitchen. The green beans were too al dente. The service was very attentive and friendly. This was one of the best meals, if not the best, that we had during our 3 week holiday!

Service was good and fit out is nice — tried the tasting menu — was ok — lamb was tough — the dessert didn’t work together — in all it was ok but I’ve had a lot better from similar standard restaurants

I came to Matterhorn to celebrate with a few friends one Friday evening, about 10:30pm. It wasn’t crowded at all, so we were able to get a big booth and spread out. We didn’t eat, so this review is just for the drinks. We each had 2 drinks, and literally every one of them was delicious. There were gin drinks and whisky drinks and drinks on fire and drinks with vege garnishes. Their cocktail menu is huge and I really don’t think you can go wrong with any of them. My favorite one was a ginger and scotch cocktail, might be the Deer’s Dram? Listen, just pick whatever liquor you like and order a cocktail with that in it. Hell, I don’t even like scotch, but it was my favorite drink of the whole night. Their cocktail program is very, very well crafted, so trust their work! Definitely on the pricey side, and with that comes a bit of pretension, which is not a bad thing. If you’re in the mood to spend a few extra $, this place will make you feel fancy and be well worth the money.

After visiting a couple of times for drinks, I was keen to visit Matterhorn for dinner. Visits for drinks had been great — fantastic service, extensive wine list and an intimate ambience that isn’t too hip nor too grungy. I was ready to declare Matterhorn my new favourite. We chose to dine on Friday of a long weekend while the rest of Auckland sat on the Southern Motorway parking lot. Others clearly had the same idea, as Matterhorn was busy. We arrived a little early so started with a drink in the bar. Once again the service was fantastic, charming and efficient. When we moved through to dining, the service experience started to fade. There were some big gaps in service and we had to ask for our water glasses to be refilled. We were following a rather large group, but we expected a little more attentiveness. The food is superb. We had the Duck Wellington and Salted Blue Cod, both of which had beautiful flavours. These were followed by Lamb Rump and Wild Red Deer, beautifully presented and delicious. Sadly we didn’t have room for dessert, all of which sounded lovely. So, is Matterhorn my new favourite? It’s definitely in my top 5. I’m sure the service issues will get ironed out. Will definitely return to try the rest of the menu.

Four stars and would go five but for a few jitters with the service. The dishes were fantastic but some guidance with the menu is always useful. As with any new place finding its way, there were a few issues but we were impressed and would go back. It must be reassuring to have such great chefs and heritage that goes with the name.
