Went for lunch on a Saturday. Quite pleased. I had La Capri galette, with chèvre, honey, sun dried tomato, and walnuts with some salad greens, and a long black. All quite good. Service was good and not obtrusive. The place is quite informal but comfortable. For two of us, the tab came to NZD40, not cheap but worth the price. We’ll be back.

Amazing savory buckwheat crepes with honey and goat cheese. Traditional breakfast of eggs, bacon, and toast was superb. And! Best flat white in town! #TravelTrollops

Brilliant! A real find. Ambience is casual and wait staff are superb. Food was first rate and I loved my first exposure to escargot which was delicious. Great whether you are with a group or dining solo. I have been there for breakfast and dinner and neither disappointed. A must try if you want a nice meal at a very reasonable price.

A perfect spot for a casual Mothers Day lunch. No reservation required. Friendly attentive staff & delicious savoury crepes. The neighbourhood is perfect for people watching, so I’ll get a table in the window & linger over a coffee or cider next time.

We are French and went there two times during our stay in Auckland. The first time, we had ‘crêpes’ and they were really good. My boyfriend even said that it was one of the best ‘galette’(salty ‘crêpe’) he ever had. The ‘crême brûlée’ was nice too. The second time we had ‘tartiflette’. It was really good. Just a quick remark: the onions were cut too big, but it was good anyway. Thanks, and maybe we will come back again before we leave Auckland!

Took my parents here for lunch last weekend and they’re still talking about it! My dad has a particular interest in French culture and he absolutely loved trying out his selection of French vocab on the waiter. The atmosphere of this place is lovely, it’s a real hidden gem that looks unimpressive from the outside but completely magical inside. We all got crepes and enjoyed them a lot! There is a variety of vegetarian options — not a lot for vegans with regard to the crepes but maybe elsewhere on the menu? The thing that really impressed us was the drinks selection! Le Garde-Manger not only has cider to match every crêpe but has a bunch of interesting liqueurs and cocktail type drinks PLUS alcoholic crepes and coffees! All a little bit pricey as they come out in pretty small glasses but still delicious and a lot of fun to try something different.

Was it the weather? Where was everyone today? This petite café is usually packed with diners, yet today there were three tables with guests. The service was friendly, avec accent français, and prompt. I loved that I never had to refill my water glass — the simple things that make a huge difference. The location and atmosphere are lovely. There’s Edith, Jacques and Serge singing in the background and the décor is certainly reminiscent of the café’s in Paris. To be honest I was a little deflated by my crêpe. The apples in the Crêpe Calva were not very sweet and tasted a bit over cooked during the caramelizing process. I was however impressed that my ice cream seemed to remain frozen inside the crêpe. How is this possible? Not complaining, just curious as I’d like to try this technique at home. What a shame, I was very much looking forward to an amazing crêpe. Alas, I must admit it was a B– overall.

I don’t remember what it was called. It was the potato, mushroom, and onion crêpe. But it was the shit.

A fantastic little restaurant. Without putting too much pressure on the place, the Lamb Shanks special I had this evening was arguably one of the best meals I’ve ever been served in a restaurant. The restaurant itself has a great little atmosphere and service is great. Highly recommended, definitely a restaurant more for a romantic dinner night than anything.

What a find! A friend of mine has been coming here a while — whenever her parents are in town, she always takes them here for dinner and now I definitely know why. Totally unassuming spot on Queen St, opposite Myers Park and the University of Otago building, it is sandwiched between little Asian restaurants, random Internet cafes and dairies. But it’s well worth the visit. Parking is not always fantastic — we parked in one of those little public car parks on a side street, but there is road side parking available if you can find it. So lets get to the food! I love onion soup — so naturally I ordered that. I also helped myself to Adrian’s escargot which were beautiful, buttery as garlicky — not at all rubbery. Next up, duck breast served with salad, potato gratin and an amazing orange sauce. Faultless. The duck was so perfect — juicy, pink, not at all dry… Such a treat to eat! Dessert was a very cliché, but superb all the same, crêpe Suzette. Topped off with a carafe of Beaujolais, I was in heaven. The service was impeccable, couldn’t ask for more. I am just incredibly jealous that Adrian works so close by, as he’s already decided he’ll be back for lunch. I, sadly, work at the other end of town…

Un petit coin de France en Nouvelle Zélande… Le Garde-Manger is tucked away between Asian restaurants on upper Queen street… It is easy to miss if you are not looking for it! But you cannot miss the typically French table cloth and the board menu if you walk past… The staff is French, and they answer the phone in French as well so do not be surprised if you call to make a reservation… Unfortunately, so far I have only eaten there once so I can only comment on their«galette» which is a traditional buckwheat savoury pancake. The fillings and names sound exactly like what you would get at a creperie in France. The portion is generous and the galette was delicious… I didnt even have space for dessert! That’s the perfect excuse to go again… I cannot wait to eat some duck or steak frites and next time I will save some space for a sweet crêpe!

Going on a hot date? This is the place! Romantic, intimate, dim lighting, reasonable prices, waiters with accents. It’s got it all — we are regulars!

Om nom nom nom! I remember walking and driving past this French restaurant and thinking to myself wow it looks prettu damn interesting. The red and white checked tables just screamed out hello, I am a french restaurant but not in a tacky way. As it happened, my boyfriend’s friend was moving out of town and she had her farewell at the restaurant. When we walked in it smelt so delicious, I couldn’t wait to order. I had the snail. Yes I swore I would never eat snail, but at that moment it felt so right! It was absolutely delicious and no it did not taste like chicken! It was crunchy but soft and tender, extremely flavorsome and delicious. For dessert I had a crêpe which was covered in nuts, absolutely delightful! The price of it all, shockingly cheap

Le Garde Manger is a sweet little French café, complete with red and white check tablecloths and classic, affordable French cuisine and wines. It has a cheery casual vibe and if you ask me, this is just the kind of place Auckland needs more of. This particular price point is grossly under-represented except in Asian eateries where we are now spoilt for choice. It’s great to have a European option and when I’m here I particularly enjoy indulging in the galettes which are also still something of a novelty in New Zealand. In France and even London you can buy these gooey little filled savoury pancakes on the streetcorners and they are SO yummy. Start with the French Onion soup, throw in a salad on the side and you have a perfect meal. A couple of glasses of one of the excellent vin rouges and the world is a better place. Beware though, the sweet crepes are also hard to refuse so pace yourself!

This is one of those places that I always walk past and want to go inside. I think it must be something to do with it looking like it’s been teleported in to Auckland from the French countryside with its little red and white tablecloths, wooden chairs and a dresser full of crockery. It’s only a small place but the menu surely has enough to suit anyone’s needs with a vast selection of vegetarian food, sweet and savoury crepes and a whole lot of authentically French mains. I only came in here for a dessert(curse places with their menus posted outside to draw you in with their delicious descriptions) one evening and wished immediately I had come for dinner too. I had a crêpe martiniquaise, a thin pancake stuffed with banana, coconut and vanilla ice cream and drizzled with chocolate sauce. Wow. Such amazing flavours altogether and good value too at only $ 10.50. I will definitely be returning soon. Would you judge me if I had a savoury crêpe for dinner and a sweet one for dessert???

Hidden in Upper Queen Street(across from Myers Park) is a beautiful and ambient French restaurant called Le Garde-Manger. The website was mouth-watering, so I booked ahead for a special dessert evening and the manager, Florent, was such a pleasure to deal with. My group enjoyed lovely desserts and paid a simple $ 5 for a flavoured crêpe, or a little more for a literally flaming flambé! The red and white table cloths joined with the genuinely French staff really made you feel like you were in France. A special treat for a lovely night out on the town!
