Como Street Cafe

A smart café by the Takapuna shops, with friendly service and comfy seating. On offer is a predictable selection of cabinet fare including some nice sandwiches, filled croissants and daily salads. There are sweet treats too. However, it would be good to see a bit more of an adventurous menu or point of difference to discern it from other cafes. For the moment, Como Street Café seems to be giving the people what they want.

Really impressed with the counter food — the filled bagels caught my eye along with the freshly prepared salads. Thinking salad was the way go today, I ordered a mixture of the zucchini & fennel, the roasted vegetable and a spoonful of the buckwheat & orange just to be sure. The generous squares of fudge brownie were also tempting — cooked just right too (did the secret poke test). The only downside to this café is the intense stuffiness inside, with the huge glass frontage there’s only the door opening and a fan inside to catch a breeze. Pretty sure I’ll be back though, plenty more to try.

After a saintly walk on Takapuna Beach today I wanted to continue the health kick and eat raw, fresh and tasty. Actually, I wanted a ham and cheese sandwich (possibly with a date scone slathered in butter to follow) made with crusty white bread but «my body is a temple» reverberated through my head. Como Street Café offers raw daily salads so I headed there. I’m glad I did. The café is a bit weird in that the room is not that friendly. Big, grey space with little, if any, personality. The raw salad of the day was a red cabbage, shredded pumpkin, radish, bean sprout and cashew nut mix. I think I may have detected mint too. Crispy, crunchy and healthy it was but could have done with something else to make it special. I will return to Como Street and try another of their raw salads because I heartily applaud any café that chooses to branch out and add in something other than bread/​carb/​meat options. Or salad out of a bag.
