Dear Chancery lane , What happened to you? You used to «be» the place to be and be seen, but sadly you are now the poor long lost cousin to that hip child britomart ! I hope you get your mojo back cause I remember having a very good steak there . With the random stores and mish mash of eateries it’s time to get it together! Yours regretfully, A concerned Unilocaler

I’ve always found Chancery Square to be a bit of a contradiction in terms. For sure it’s got the lovely European cobbled pedestrian street vibe thing down, but it’s the exception rather than the rule in this part of Auckland. It looks inward while the surrounding streets are shitty and unloved, largely down to the vast monolithic car park built to serve Chancery’s clientele. I just feel like a nice«street» environment should be in actual streets, not cordoned off from them. It feels almost like manufactured urbanism — it’s inward looking and it’s almost too perfect. In saying all that, I do spend a fair bit of time here, mostly because there are multiple spots here to get a sheesha. For that, there aint a better place to come in Auckland — I can just sit out in the courtyard with mates with a sheesha under the fairy lights, and forget how much I hate the place!

Chancery Square is really a bit of an inner-city oasis. The outdoor courtyard is surrounded by manicured shops so the concrete and traffic is hidden from view, creating a sophisticated, elegant environment. I think Mecca café has a monopoly on the food/drink here which is fine as they do a good job at both. Their little bar in the centre of the square is a nice place for an after-work drink if it’s operating. The main problem I have is getting distracted by all the beautiful handbags, jewellery etc on display in the shop windows, and with a pretty price tag to match! Not for those on a strict budget!

I absolutely love Chancery Square, every time my foot hits the cobbled stone I feel like I am no longer in Auckland. I feel like I have walked into a destination that is far away from everyday life, deadlines and work. I love the feel of it, seeing people sitting outside having a drink, smoking some shisha and munching on delicious food. Housing some of impressive restaurants such as Mecca, Invito and Caravenserai, one is never short of delight and enjoyment at Chancery Square. I love seeing people shopping at in boutiques located on the square. They all look so engrossed in the fashion and all so passionate about it. Chancery Square is full of life with restaurants that play pumping music to set the tone on a Friday & Saturday night. When you go there on a Sunday afternoon, it is the perfect place to eat, chill and nurse a hangover. Chancery Square definitely brings a little something different to the city of Auckland.
